This is not about poverty, but about criminals making logical choices about behaviour. If theft is unpunished, criminals will thieve. Go figure! Waitrose is also endangering its staff, and I hope they get sued as a result. But the astute in many, perhaps most, disciplines are going for apprenticeships to get a salary from day one, avoiding crippling tuition fees and gaining real world experience.

@lib_thinks The sacking sounds harsh but please consider the possibility that there's more to this story than meets the eye. Employers have to follow a particular process to avoid an unfair dismissal claim. For example, the 'Burchell Test' is often cited in conduct-related dismissal cases.
