@MRyanBLS

Formerly Head of Chemistry at an academic school. I have a lovely wife and two fine sons and a recent, very lovely, daughter-in-law. Opinions here are my own.

The driver of this Renault was stopped on the #M6. The driver thought it was a good idea to fraudulently insure his vehicle. The driver was in fact not covered to drive the vehicle. Driver reported vehicle seized. #OpLightning Team 1

@Headteacherchat In one school, I found that I wasn’t being interviewed for a promotion when the cover board showed me covering someone at the time of the interviews. In answer to the original question, I get the pressures but schools could help by agreeing a standard application form.

Is it standard practice not to notify applicants who are not selected for interview? We have received feedback from several candidates stating they were not contacted after submitting their applications.

@BenJLTaylor I have no reason to doubt the data, but the graphic is clever. Those who look but don’t read will see a massive change. Yes, the change is in the right direction but they are trying to steer a supertanker away from the rocks.

We are 6 months in and these are the results we are already seeing. Don’t let anyone distract you with false narratives of failure, they just want you to ignore the facts. The country is already doing better under Labour and will continue to do so.

@ianpacemain One minor salvation is that there are musicians specialising in other subjects who can read music but why are we in this God-awful mess.

Accurate review of my book. "A lovely blend of recipes and 'stuff' from Haystacks to a dismembered toilet!"

@professor_dave You’ve created a lovely blend of recipes, pictures, tour guides, autobiography and just “stuff”. The pictures are great, not just food but loads ranging from Haystacks to a dismembered toilet. I can almost smell the food, but certainly feel the love. 11yo did well too! Thank you

It's always holding the final published copy in my hand for the first time that's the most exciting bit of writing a book. amazon.co.uk/dp/1739967038

My husband died leaving me a single dad, my son's additional needs saw him repeatedly excluded from school, and I was diagnosed with cancer. This optimistic new cookbook explains how my son and I cope with difficult days, making the best of life. amazon.co.uk/dp/1739967038

@tombennett71 Twenty years ago we were told we had to have one in science. Nice idea to trial? No, they couldn’t organise the timetable to suit and then were shocked that we didn’t develop lessons to use it properly. Why design the same lesson twice? Would it have been good? I’ll never know!

I will die on this hill. IWBs were one of the most costly scandals ever in education. So ubiquitous now we can barely admit that their utility is hugely outweighed by the cost and complexity for most.
Adam Boxer@adamboxer1

@mikercameron @StuartLock IWBs are a massive waste of money. Can achieve better results by far with much less outlay.

We’ve had a wonderful day watching Morecambe against Chelsea. Although we lost 5-0, the team can be very proud of themselves.

@RetirementTales I ended up returning to teaching for a few months. Wow, it has changed in even a few years but your thread reminded me of what we ought to be doing rather than what we are told we have to be doing.

The wind changed... Alas, tomorrow will be the final day of Retirement Tales. Margaret and I offer our heartfelt thanks to every single person who has engaged with our account over the last three years. This hasn't just been social media; it's been community and friendship.

What does a new widow do on NYE? She listens to @BBCRadio2, opens a bottle and toasts her amazing husband. Courageous, wise, strong, creative and never dull. They didn’t call him the Pirate for nothing. Above all - the most devoted loving husband. Pls raise a 🥂to Johnnie Walker

Glad to finally see the back of 2024 - diagnosed with cancer, school problems for the 11yo, first year after the death of my best friend, redundancies at work - it's been a particularly crappy one.

@JohnBaldLangLit When SLT visit Chemistry lessons they see fire, acid, mobility and potential death. How does MFL / Art / Maths / Geog SLT have a Scooby how to improve a Chemistry lesson unless it’s absolutely dire?

Why is England the only place in Europe where teachers are expected to hand in their planning to management, and complete reams of assessment based on guesswork? The whole system is an insult to intelligence as well as a denial of professionalism.

@JohnBaldLangLit Recently went back to teach Y10-Y13 on a teach-only basis. No “sociologist” or “social worker“ commitments. No checking that X had filled in progress sheet Y etc. I believe the kids found my contribution useful.

The best thing about lesson observations was what I learned about the craft of the classroom from other colleagues Worst thing - making one word judgments or pretending to be an expert

@realMaalouf A Muslim student once apologised for his Mum not shaking my hand. I said there was no apology necessary. All societies have “touch / don’t touch zones” French love to kiss on meeting, UK less so. Shaking hands is supposed to be a sign of respect, rather than a challenge.

During a graduation ceremony in Germany, a Muslim woman refused to shake hands with the dean. Shaking hands is ‘haram’, but seeking refuge in their country, getting free housing and food, and living on welfare is ‘halal’. What do you think? x.com/AHuxley1963/st…

Just finished reading Four Seasons in Japan by Nick Bradley. The story of a translator uncovering a lost book and an evocative, seasonal immersion into the world of that book. I'm a huge Japan-o-phile and this book was an utterly beguiling read.

Got a last minute standing ticket for Macbeth with David Tennant and Cush Jumbo at the Harold Pinter Theatre tonight for only £20. (The seated tickets were £250!) See it if you can. The sore feet are worth it.
