Something I noticed when looking at all these discussions about Blade of Courage versus IDW is that you can tell neither side has read a manga or comic book that doesn’t have the silly blue hedgehog on the cover.

@fatefan2 Not even. Even static shonen protags have breaking points. This discourse is like if Dragon Ball fans kept bringing up when Goku implied he was gonna beat Gohan if he didn’t leave him to fight Frieza.

Stop cherry-picking... He doesn't just "admit" that he's messed up; he keeps ruminating on his mistakes and shortcoming, and lets it affect him deeply on multiple occasions. This is out of character. BoC doesn't need moments of self-doubt to set up his determination. He just IS.

@WamoZero We’ll have to agree to disagree then because none of Sonic’s traits have been broken. If that’s considered character breaking then NOBODY should be asking him to be more like static shonen protagonists considering they snap far worse than Sonic ever did.

"Go to hell" is boring. "I hope your favorite franchise gets adapted into a netflix anime by adi shankar and your favorite characters mischaracterized" is terrifying. It's possible. It's happening to people

@Hoppydoesntread I like Barracuda as a physical threat and goofy foil to Frank but my god, Ennis’ slur-throwing for him is just too much.

Things are going pretty well, then the Barracuda shows up and Garth disappears, it’s only Ennis. I like the reassessment of him as a writer on here, but he does in fact make excessive use of slurs, and a lot of it is actually racist no matter how satirical it’s meant to be.

@WamoZero That’s not even “realistic” or “relatable” though. Even the static shonen protagonists everyone wants Sonic to be like Goku and Luffy have had arcs that mentally and emotionally challenged them to their breaking point.

@tails_spin I personally think trying to fit Sonic into the realistic and relatable person mold like millions of other characters just takes away what makes him unique. If I wanted that, I’d just go watch/read something else or look at other Sonic characters like Shadow and Blaze instead.

@MettallicOnyx Meanwhile with Goku, he confessed to not having faith in his strength while overcoming a slump mastering Ultra Instinct and having a small mental shutdown after learning about his Dad.

@NeoBrush98 Toriyama actually did oversee an arc where Goku got sad and doubted himself. It was the Granolah arc. He confessed in that story that he was NEVER confident in his strength and needed inspiration from Bardock to fully embrace it.

@saltydkdan I think what he means to say (and could have phrased better) is that it's like expecting Goku to start acting sad and doubting himself. Sonic flying into a rage, much like Goku did, would have gone over far better as a big "hype moment".

@luigitimepdv A mental breakdown can be full of intense rage. It’s not just crying or doubting. He implied he was so pissed off he was likely gonna hit Gohan if he stayed in his line of sight cause he was losing his sanity.

@InstantReplay17 Goku threatened his own son to get him to leave and is the only point in the entire franchise he is visibly pissed off at him. He wasn’t in a rational state of mind.

@Salty_Sealz I think it had a throwaway line in Shadow the Hedgehog. Other than that it wasn’t really focused on till Shadow Generations.

I'm gonna be so real, was there ever a focus on Maria's sickness within the actual Games? I know it's in external media and manuals but I don't remember if it was ever addressed pre-shadow gens in a game..
