Florida's Halo Law, effective January 1, 2025, establishes a 25-foot "no-go" zone around first responders (including police, firefighters, and paramedics) to prevent interference, threats, or harassment. Individuals who enter this zone after being given a verbal warning face a second-degree misdemeanor, which can result in up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. The law was passed to protect first responders, but some civil liberties groups have expressed concerns that it could hinder the public's ability to record officers. Distance Requirement: After receiving a verbal warning from a first responder (law enforcement, firefighter, or paramedic) engaged in their official duties, you must immediately retreat and maintain a distance of at least 25 feet. Prohibited Intent: It is a second-degree misdemeanor to approach or remain within the 25-foot buffer zone with the intent to block, interfere with, threaten, or harass the first responder. Be Smart, Be Mindful, Think 1st.
