Moreover, India’s compliance with U.S. international sanctions has further weakened the rules-based international order and the UN’s multilateral mandate.

I welcome Iran’s announcements that the Strait of Hormuz is completely open for all commercial vessels for the remainder of the ceasefire. This a step in the right direction. The @UN position remains clear: we need the full restoration of international navigational rights & freedoms in the Strait of Hormuz, respected by everyone. I also hope that, together with the ceasefire, this measure will contribute to creating confidence between the parties and strengthen the ongoing dialogue facilitated by Pakistan.

In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran.

India’s ties with Israel are deep and in our policy circles, there is obviously entrenched gratitude for the support provided by Israel in past crises or more recent contingencies, thus providing strategic comfort. We cannot forget those who stand by us in critical moments, and this is how partnerships are built. But should this become the basis for uncritical alignment? Foreign policy cannot be an exercise in gratitude. Judgement should distinguish between bilateral cooperation, which may run very deep, and regional conduct, which is expansionist and escalatory. Conflating the two narrows India’s strategic space. The capacity for calibrated engagement has historically been a key determinant in Indian foreign policy. We should value our strategic relationship with Israel, but that does not entail an abandonment of a strategic assessment of its actions. Strategic partnership cannot morph into strategic indulgence , which is not in our country’s long-term interest . Partnerships must deepen trust, not constrain judgement.
