Dit boek ben ik al maandenlang aan het lezen. In stukjes en beetjes, omdat ik de informatie steeds even moet laten bezinken. Dat is niet erg en ook nodig, want wat zijn we eenzijdig geïnformeerd door de main stream media. Al decennialang. Door dit boek, met 750 bladzijden en ruim 2000 bronnen, stel ik stukje bij beetje mijn beeld van de geschiedenis bij. Het kost wel tijd, tenminste mij wel, omdat ik de geschiedenis zoals die me ooit aangereikt is, via de krant met name, helemaal opnieuw moet bekijken, als het ware door een andere bril van hoe het ook zou kunnen zijn. Over Amerika (de VS), over het ontstaan van de Europese Unie, over Oekraïne, over de rol van de media, die zich als lakeien van de macht, in plaats van als waakhond voor de bevolking, zijn gaan gedragen. Waarom doen de media dat? Ook dat wordt door het lezen van dit boek duidelijk. Posts over dit boek worden onderdrukt als ik een link of een foto gebruik, vandaar een foto van mij, afgelopen mooie lentedag, in onze achtertuin. Het boek ´bij gebrek aan beter´ is twee jaar geleden uitgekomen. Na de hoofdstukken over onder andere het militair-industrieel complex, de main stream media, de financiële crisis van 2007, Libië (met de hartverscheurende andere kant van het verhaal, hoe deze Parel van Afrika platgebombardeerd is, terug de middeleeuwen in) en Rusland ben ik inmiddels aanbeland in het hoofdstuk over de EU. Ik ben het boek al een tijd aan het lezen en er gaat een wereld voor me open. Vrolijk word ik er niet van, hoewel de beschrijvingen soms hilarisch zijn, maar het is verdrietig om te vernemen wat als een rode draad door het boek loopt. Hoe politici en ook de media keer op keer kiezen voor eigenbelang, onder invloed van machtige lobbies zoals het militair-industrieel complex, in plaats van het belang van de bevolkingen die ze zouden moeten dienen. Onze 21e eeuw ontvouwt zich totaal anders dan verwacht. In plaats van vrede en veiligheid is de Koude Oorlog weer heet en het uitbreken van een Derde Wereldoorlog lijkt dichterbij dan ooit, helemaal sinds afgelopen zaterdag 28 februari j.l. Amerika Iran is gaan bombarderen. Van de main stream media hoeven we geen genuanceerde berichtgeving te verwachten. Dus dat scheelt heel veel tijd. Het boek 'bij gebrek aan beter' van Diedert de Wagt schept orde in een ogenschijnlijk chaotische wereld en biedt een uitweg uit het labyrint van nepnieuws, desinformatie en dubbele agenda’s waarmee we dagelijks worden geconfronteerd. Je krijgt door het lezen een soort van grip op al die gebeurtenissen die ogenschijnlijk niets met elkaar te maken hebben. Ik weet wel dat grip een illusie is, we hebben geen grip op wat politieke leiders beslissen en doen. Maar toch heb ik door het lezen van dit boek minder het gevoel dat ik heen en weer geslingerd wordt tussen allerlei doemscenario's. Je kan het boek via de website bgab .eu bestellen.
