To say that I have been disappointed in the Lebanese Armed Forces’ leadership under General Haykal and their willingness to take on Hezbollah is an understatement. Now, the LAF is openly talking about abandoning Christian villages in the South, subjecting them to Hezbollah attacks and trying to blame Israel. To the Lebanese government, this is a very dangerous decision and you will be held accountable for the consequences of this decision if Christian villages are attacked by Hezbollah. The funeral of Father Pierre El-Rahi, Maronite parish priest of a Christian village, is celebrated today in #Lebanon, as these villages once again experience the tragedy of war. I am close to all the Lebanese people in this time of grave trial. Fr. Pierre was a true shepherd. As soon as he heard that parishioners had been wounded in a bombing, he rushed to help without hesitation. The Lebanese government must formally designate #Hezbollah as a #terrorist organization, without distinguishing between its political and militant branches. Hezbollah’s leadership must be held accountable for the devastation of #Lebanon. A fight between the Lebanese Army and a terrorist militia occupying the country is not a civil war. Whether #Israel is bombing them or not is irrelevant. I just had a very brief meeting with the Lebanese Chief of Defense General Rodolphe Haykal. I asked him point blank if he believes Hezbollah is a terrorist organization. He said, “No, not in the context of Lebanon.” With that, I ended the meeting. They are clearly a terrorist organization. Hezbollah has American blood on its hands. Just ask the U.S. Marines. They have been designated as a foreign terrorist organization by both Republican and Democrat administrations since 1997 – for good reason. As long as this attitude exists from the Lebanese Armed Forces, I don’t think we have a reliable partner in them. I am tired of the double speak in the Middle East. Too much is at stake.
