Today’s topic: How to make your product impossible to ignore in a saturated niche. A lot of brands try to fit in. They want their olive oil bottles to look like wine bottles or their skin care line to be minimalistic. But if you do the complete opposite of everyone else, you’ll get the attention people are fighting for through "Controlled Confusion." If you think about it, our brains run on autopilot in the grocery store or while scrolling. We scan for patterns. But when you see Engine Gin packaged in a rusted motor oil can, or Maison Margiela selling t-shirts vacuum-sealed like raw meat, your brain has to stop to process it. This "Chaos Packaging" forces a Pattern Interrupt. You see it with Graza, who took premium olive oil and put it in a "cheap" plastic squeeze bottle instead of glass. Or Flo, packing organic tampons in ice cream tubs. Or Vacation putting sunscreen in a whipped cream canister. That split-second of confusion can be absolute money. However, it has to be done right. If the idea is forced, it’s just a gimmick. But if the execution connects, like Oshun / @JoeWelstead putting electrolytes in a high-end "soap pump", it feels intentional. It signals that the product is for daily use, not just a supplement. I personally love the idea of Chaos Packaging, especially in overcrowded niches, but the execution has to be perfect. One of the first brands I think really blew this idea up was Flow, packaging their water in that milk-carton style. That was the first example I personally remember seeing years ago, but there have to be others.

Everything is closed today so my fiancée and I went to the movies I haven’t seen the movies that crowded in years. Every seat booked out. Felt like the early 2000-2018 when you’d see a big premier. Makes me nostalgic. It feels like these kinds of places are all dying out. Magical third places gone in a trade for convenience.
