Last night, Shamim Mafi, 44, of Woodland Hills, was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport for trafficking arms on behalf of the government of Iran. She is charged with a violation of 50 U.S.C. § 1705 for brokering the sale of drones, bombs, bomb fuses, and millions of rounds of ammunition manufactured by Iran and sold to Sudan. If convicted, she faces a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. Mafi is an Iranian national who became a lawful permanent resident of the United States in 2016. She is expected to make her initial appearance on Monday afternoon in U.S. District Court in downtown L.A. She is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Shopkeepers shuttered their stores in solidarity. Millions of ordinary people did extraordinary things in city after city in an epic display of national unity. The regime answered with bullets, mass arrests, and show trials and executions. Facing an inhuman evil, Iranians showed superhuman bravery. More than 40,000 gave their lives. My compatriots kept going and their courage belongs to history. This is the final battle and they are preparing to win the war against the Islamic Republic. In this battle to reclaim our nation, I will not stop fighting until the day they are free. We hope the world will be with us. Reaktionerne – eller manglen på samme – er et glimrende eksempel på det hykleri og den forskelsbehandling, det internationale samfund udviser, når det kommer til Israel og Hizbollah (og terrorgrupper i det hele taget). FN’s generalsekretær fordømte angrebet, men nægtede selvfølgelig at nævne Hizbollah. Hvis man kun læser hans udtalelse, ville man ikke ane, hvem der stod bag. UNIFIL bruger selv betegnelsen “non-state actor” og skriver først langt nede i deres pressemeddelelse, at der “angiveligt” er tale om Hizbollah, selvom den franske præsident Macron har udtalt, at alt tyder på, at det er Hizbollah, der står bag. Der har stort set ingen reaktioner været fra andre EU-lande. NGO’er som Amnesty siger ikke et ord, og herhjemme har de sædvanlige hyklere også været bomstille – særligt Enhedslisten, der ellers går meget op i FN-soldaternes ve og vel. Ikke et ord. Når UNIFIL-baser eller soldater er blevet ramt af israelske angreb, står hylekoret klar. Stærke fordømmelser fra FN, NGO’er, politikere og EU-ledere. Et eksempel er, da israelske kampvogne affyrede skud i retning af en FN-base i Libanon, hvor to UNIFIL-soldater kom til skade. Massive fordømmelser fra FN, Italien, Irland, Spanien og Frankrig – samt Amnesty, for at nævne nogle få. Med andre ord: Når Israel rammer FN-baser, der ligger i områder, hvor de bekæmper Hizbollah, er der ramaskrig. International fordømmelse. Når Hizbollah dræber FN-soldater, er der stilhed stort set hele vejen rundt. Det bedste, man kan håbe på, er en overfladisk fordømmelse fra FN’s generalsekretær, der ikke kan få sig selv til at nævne Hizbollah. Det er eklatant hykleri og ét af uendeligt mange eksempler på forskelsbehandling af Israel og terrorgrupper. Det er i mine øjne vores job som journalister at kalde hykleriet ud – at forklare og berette om det til læsere, seere og lyttere. Der er stadig alt for mange, der mener, at FN er en “neutral” og pålidelig kilde til, hvad der foregår – særligt i Mellemøsten. Det kunne ikke være længere fra sandheden. FN-soldater har i over 20 år stået og kigget på, at Hizbollah har brudt FN’s Sikkerhedsråds resolution fra 2006, der krævede, at terrorgruppen skulle afvæbnes. I stedet oprustede de for øjnene af dem og kontrollerede, hvor FN-soldater overhovedet måtte operere i Sydlibanon. Like many other countries, Iran can have peaceful nuclear power but no enrichment. How this conflict ends will determine the stability of the region and the world for decades to come.
