Turn around, don't drown! • Never drive into a flooded roadway. Cars can be swept away in two feet of moving water. • Do not drive around road barriers. Roads and bridges may be washed out or structurally unsound. To learn more visit: mass.gov/mema/floods #FloodSafetyAwarenessWeek

In emergency management, it's important to anticipate future conditions and mitigate against disasters to protect lives and property. Recently, MEMA’s mitigation team visited a construction site in Milford to observe the progress of a project designed to increase hydraulic capacity to prevent flooding. A 540-foot stone-lined section of Godfrey Brook built in the 1930s has been collecting debris and needing numerous repairs. The new concrete channel will be constructed to be deeper and wider, with added drainage to reduce flooding in the surrounding neighborhood area. This project is a partnership between the Town of Milford, MEMA, and FEMA and made possible by FEMA’s Pre-Disaster Mitigation Program. #MitigationMonday

If you're going to be on the roads tonight or Friday morning, be careful of potential icy conditions. Leave extra time to reach your destination and extra space between you and the driver in front of you.
NWS Boston@NWSBoston

Rain changes over to a wintry mix to freezing rain/sleet Thu PM-Fri. The greatest risk for ice is in the S. Worcester Hills and S Berkshires, with significant sleet more likely further north. There is also a low risk for a burst of a few inches of snow across northern MA on Fri.

With more wintry weather on the way, it's important to remember to clear any ice and debris from storm drains near your property. This will allow water to flow properly and prevent flooding.

Many thanks to the crews from Connecticut, New York, and Vermont who helped eastern Massachusetts dig out from the Blizzard of 2026 through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC). EMAC is a mutual aid agreement among U.S. states and territories that facilitates resource sharing during disasters and emergencies. When the blizzard hit Massachusetts, @MassGovernor directed MEMA to request assistance through EMAC. Our neighbors stepped up, sending hundreds of pieces of equipment, from front end loaders to dump trucks, and dozens of personnel to help move snow. Working alongside municipalities, state agencies, @MassDOT, county sheriffs' departments, and the Massachusetts National Guard, you moved mountains (of snow)! Thank you!

If you notice a fire hydrant in your neighborhood that is covered with snow from the blizzard, please consider shoveling it out if you're able. Clearing the snow three feet in all directions will help firefighters if they have to respond to a nearby fire.

Massachusetts: we haven’t seen a blizzard like this since ’78. We’ve made real progress clearing roads and restoring power — but we’ve got work left to do.
