There is a number that doesn’t exist, at least not on the real number line. Mathematicians were faced with solving the equation x² = −1, but no real number squared can ever be negative. So they invented one. It might sound absurd at first, but geometrically it’s elegant. Multiplying any number by i corresponds to a 90° rotation in the complex plane. Multiply by i again, and you rotate 180°, which is the same as multiplying by −1.
