A policeman, seen by millions on TV, repeatedly striking a miner with a truncheon at Orgreave is not to face any criminal charges. The announcement came from the Director of Public Prosecutions #OnThisDay 1984.

Victims deserve faster, fairer justice after years of decline under the Tories. Today I’m announcing there will be no cap on Crown Court sitting days next year. With record investment, courts will run at full capacity - meaning if a case can be heard, it will be.

This is a very risky legislative approach. Plan requires taking all Commons stages in a single week on floor of the House. And forcing Lords to accept it as an ‘emergency’ and hoping for no ping-pong. There are at best 7 or 8 sitting weeks left. The Lords, allowing for minimum intervals, will need 7* weeks minimum and that’s taking a single day per stage. Legislation in the Lords travels fast in emergencies only by agreement in usual channels - try to ride rough shod and things break down not just for that bill but elsewhere. Contaminating the rest of the programme when the Lords Chief Whip is already trying to get the reminder of the programme sorted is inadvisable. And then it sets up a two House strategy for those opposed to removal of jury trial, with repetitive votes at ping pong IMMEDIATELY before the locals *(two weekends between First and Second Reading, 14 calendar days between Second Reading and Committee, 14 days between Committee and Report (for complex bills), and three sitting days between Report and Third Reading)

JUST ANNOUNCED: This Labour government will bring our criminal justice system into the 21st century. - Unlimited Crown Court sitting days - the highest level ever funded under any government in the history of our country. - Magistrates' Courts funded to hear as many cases as the system can deliver. - New AI supported courts assistant (J-AI) and National Listing Framework to limit unnecessary delays for victims. - More 'Blitz' courts surge to tackle backlog of assault against emergency workers. - Audio recording in all Magistrates' Courts, putting decisions on the record. - Victims able to request a free copy of sentencing remarks, without needing to attend court. - A new Judge-only Bench Division in the Crown Court - with cases likely to receive sentences of up to three years heard by a judge, while the most serious offences such as rape and murder remain before a jury. Around three-quarters of Crown Court trials will still be heard by a jury. - £12m extra in 2026/27 to expand Al and speed up processes. - More video hearings than ever before. -Prisoner Escort & Custody Service vehicles allowed to use bus lanes to fast-track prisoners to court. Only by pulling all three levers - investment, modernisation and efficiency - will we clear the backlog and restore swift and fair justice for victims.

Labour is taking decisive action to reform and renew our court system, making it fit for 21st Century justice More: gov.uk/government/new…

This has nothing to do with justice, cost-saving or backlogs. It is a bureaucratic and authoritarian measure, designed to prevent the public having their proper role in the justice system. PM aims to abolish juries in half of trials before May elections thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…
