Statins, Muscle Weakness, and Signs of Gut Permeability and Inflammation A recent study in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology explored the physical performance and various biomarkers in 172 patients diagnosed with chronic heart failure. Patients taking statins experienced a significant increase in CAF22 (a marker of muscle wasting and sarcopenia), zonulin (a marker of intestinal barrier integrity), and C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation). Statin patients also demonstrated reduced hand-grip and gait speed compared to those not taking statins.
