1. Hospitals frequently discharge mothers before the baby can be released. You don't want a heathy mother to remain in a hospital a minute longer than necessary due to viruses and bacteria. 2. There is a protocol regarding tests like liver function to be met or exceeded before a baby is released.

A couple, thrilled to welcome their newborn, is eager to bring the baby home. Although the mother has already been discharged from the hospital, the baby must remain until the doctor gives approval.
