@mega64 Haven't played X but have a little of X-2, think the gameplay is similar and it is pretty fun. For me a non-rpg main player it keeps the battles moving and forces me to act fast.

Mostly just parents who want to buy the fortnite/fifa box for their kids and move on with their lives. Although I suspect even amongst this audience there will be eventual pushback.

Sony’s news to remove physical from gaming is akin to the 1983 video game crash as far as lasting effect. It’s going to continue sending shockwaves throughout our industry for a very long time. As consumers, we need to be reminded that we are the reason that this industry is the most dominant in the world. Our wallets and purses decide the fate of these companies. So if we want to truly respond to such a devastating turn of events, PlayStation Plus memberships need to be canceled. Wolverine sales and yes, dare I say even GTA 6 sales both need to have disappointing sales on launch. I know this requires a heavy resistance of FOMO many of us share, but we can’t reward disasters like this with open wallets. We can’t have it both ways. We either stand strong on the things we cherish about this industry, or let it get destroyed one pillar at at time. We have the power of the purse. We fund the industry. And if we band together strongly enough, we can send our own shockwaves that still preserve the things we value about gaming. @PlayStation

@SkyKniight It feels redundant to remind us that this is Sony's fault ; of course it is, it's their business and their decisions. But ultimately its the players who decided its still worth supporting playstation despite the writing on the wall.

This is incredibly disingenuous. Yes, I buy digital games. I game for the games first and foremost, not the format. But I also partake in and have bought physical games my entire life - including on PS5 and Switch2. I can have been accepting and of the all digital future eventually and still think it sucks at the same time. Complex, nuanced thoughts are allowed. I have a brand new physical game in my possession in 2026. I don’t want that option to go away. Just because it won’t stop me from gaming doesn’t mean I want it to happen. My desire to play games trumps my desire to complain. And that should be allowed.

Barring corps outright lying to you, you know what you are going into when you buy digital licenses.

The physical vs digital debate keeps getting framed the wrong way. It’s not really about discs taking up space or downloads being more convenient. It’s about whether you actually own what you pay for.Physical media = you own it. You can play it, sell it, lend it, or leave it on a shelf for 30 years. No account, no internet, no company can reach in and take it back . Digital = you own nothing. You’re granted a revocable license. One that can be (and has been) revoked when a server shuts down, a company goes bankrupt, an account gets banned, or they simply decide to delist the thing you “bought.” That’s the actual conversation.

What I don’t understand about the digital only players is if you personally don’t care about everything being all digital that’s fine, but why are they so quick to dismiss concerns over billion dollar corporation control? Even physical media users want digital users to own the product. It’s just the digital side is always bringing up unnecessary arguments to dismiss the want for ownership. Just because YOU are ok with not owning a product you paid for, doesn’t mean the people fighting for your right to own that product are wrong for fighting for EVERYONE’S right. It’s so weird

Even steam has a clause that basically allows them to fuckoff if they ever wanted to

These results are VERY telling… Although we only had about 10k votes, it’s interesting to see 85+% of people saying they won’t support a digital only PlayStation. Yet, Sony continues doubling down on their fluffed up “market data”, to try and convince gamers that only 15% of them are buying physical games. Don’t let Sony get away with this.

@ItsToriGalvin I don't even care if they're selfish, they're just stupid. They have no concept of second order consequences. With digital only, Sony has complete control over access to the games on the console. They can make every game $100 3 month rentals-only if they want.

If your view on this whole ‘PlayStation going fully digital and doing away with physical’ is as follows “I haven’t bought a physical disc since blah blah blah so nothing will change for me” “They have to cut their losses most people buy digital anyway” “Get with the times” You’re just telling people that you are genuinely a selfish person and are missing the whole point of why so many people are outraged by this. @MKBHD Talk more about how this kills the modding scene. If all games are run under a license and ToS prehibits modding like we're starting to see, licenses will be revoked. Ppl streaming a modded game will then be outting themselves as being in breach of ToS, or an illegal copy.

We should talk more about why the disc price and the download price of a game are EVER the same

@Alenonimo @SuperButterBuns I imagine it would be prohibitively expensive to develop a proprietary cartridge system for your console? Discs in general work because they are a universal medium with a huge industry behind it at this point.

@SuperButterBuns We have the technology to go back to cartridges and make them so they can update the game INSIDE the cartridge. We don't do it because the world ended in 2012 and we're all in hell now.

Ya know if modern game discs didn't have to copy their data to a consoles hard drive and could just pop in & play instantly, then maybe they would maintained popularity. Like big tech just kinda gave up on creating faster/efficient means to read data from physical items
