This was the most profound experience of my life. I am stunned beyond comprehension. This molecule is without peer. The 27mg dose opened up what felt like pure consciousness and intelligence. A swell of loyalty and devotion emerged inside me, pledging allegiance to existence. To become a warrior and caretaker of life on earth. To protect at any cost the candle of consciousness that has miraculously emerged in this part of the galaxy. What awaits will wipe all your tears, soothe all your sorrows, and infinitely exceed your wants.

"Min fiendes fiende"-syndromet Under 1970-talet bestod oppositionen mot den västvänlige Shahen av en brokig skara. Där fanns de religiösa islamisterna ledda av Ayatollah Khomeini, men där fanns också en enorm och stark vänsterrörelse (till exempel det sovjetstödda Tudeh-partiet, olika marxist-leninistiska grupper och studentrörelser). Vänstern gjorde här sitt första fundamentala fel: De lät sitt hat mot USA, kapitalismen och imperialismen trumfa all annan logik. Khomeini pratade också om att kasta ut amerikanerna, och vänstern svalde betet. Istället för att varna för den religiösa fundamentalismen, allierade man sig med den. De valde att marschera axel mot axel med radikala islamister eftersom de ansåg att "kampen mot imperialismen" var det enda som räknades. 2. Den monumentala naiviteten (Att agera nyttiga idioter) Vänsterns intellektuella, författare och studenter stod för mycket av revolutionens teoretiska ramverk, organisatoriska kraft och, i vissa fall, gerillakrigföring. De strejkade, skrev pamfletter och mobiliserade massorna. Deras kalkyl var djupt arrogant och naiv: De trodde på fullaste allvar att de gamla, religiösa prästerna var omoderna och svaga. Den socialistiska övertygelsen var att mullorna bara var en "tillfällig språngbräda" för att störta Shahen. Vänstern var övertygad om att när revolutionen väl var vunnen, skulle folket vända sig till dem, marxisterna, för att bygga det moderna utopiska samhället. Prästerna skulle snällt återvända till sina moskéer. De hade katastrofalt fel. 3. Slakten och sveket När Shahen väl hade flytt landet i början av 1979 och Khomeini återvände som segrare, dröjde det inte länge förrän fällan slog igen. Vänstern hade gett Khomeini den folkliga legitimitet och den gatumakt han behövde för att ta över statsapparaten. När den islamiska republiken var utropad och Khomeini hade säkrat makten över militären och domstolarna, behövde han inte vänstern längre. Belöningen för att de hade hjälpt honom till makten blev inte ministerposter eller ett demokratiskt samhälle. Det blev skoningslös utrensning. Kommunister, socialister och fackföreningsledare fängslades, torterades och avrättades i tusental i fängelser som Evin. Revolutionen åt snabbt upp sina egna barn, och vänstern slaktades av den regim de själva hade hjälpt att skapa. Sammanfattning: Den iranska vänstern 1979 är det ultimata, historiska exemplet på faran i att blinda sig själv med ideologi. De trodde att de kunde rida på den islamistiska tigern för att nå sina egna politiska mål, men insåg för sent att tigern var hungrig. Vänstern i väst går samma väg när de på allvar tror att de kommer ta makten med hjälp av islamisterna för all framtid. Se detta så förstår ni vår framtid.
