Spending the night in an ER with a loved one really puts things into perspective. Dumb stuff really does not matter.

Free range parenting is way more radical than free internet parenting. In the real world your kids can be kidnapped, take drugs, lose an eye to a BB gun, etc. The internet is mostly just pixels on a screen. Limit screen time, sure, but otherwise let your kids browse freely.

The very notion of "kids online safety" has always confused me. I've been online since 1999. The internet has only gotten "safer" since, given the rise of big platform, content moderation, security features, etc. If anything the internet is *too* safe now.

@phl43 @History__Speaks How powerful is the USA when a 30% increase in gas prices, to a level less than what gas was priced a few years ago, is enough to pressure an end to the conflict?

I think it will hurt the US, but it will hurt the rest of the world even more, because the US is more insulated from the both the energy shock and the economic slowdown that will result from it. I think all the other stuff will likely not matter a lot one way or another in the long run. As I keep saying, the problem with the US is that it's so rich and powerful that, except in dealing with China, it can do the stupidest shit imaginable and it won't really matter that much to Americans in the grand scheme of things, which is why you never learn.

I'm on record saying this war is profoundly retarded in about every possible way, so I don't say that because I believe in the memes about how it's a genius move that will end US involvement in the Middle East and ensure a 1,000 years American reich, but I don't think I can take another post talking about how this is the end of the American hegemony because Valerian suffered a crushing defeat against the Sassanid empire in 260 CE.

@RobGeorge This is the thing: Disney Parks are, maybe, in a sneakily large amount of trouble because they’re losing the next generation due to ticket prices, lack of interest, etc. It’s a similar problem with movie theaters but papered over by all the Disney Adults still coming to parks.

Catastrophic insurance is actually what “insurance” is supposed to mean. Routine costs (doc visits, occasional urgent care, prescriptions, the sort of stuff that people predictably use) were paid in cash - and were cheaper because of it. INSURANCE was supposed to be for unpredictable costs, like getting cancer or hit by a bus. And catastrophic insurance was fantastic for that purpose without breaking the bank. “Insurance” for predictable, routine costs that most people incur is just called “paying overhead on top of expenses,” which is why most people carry accident insurance but not maintenance insurance on their cars. It wasn’t consumers who were stupid.
Launch! - Blue Haired Liberal@DBZYuYuYasha

@InezFeltscher Catastrophic insurance basically isn't insurance. That's why it was effectively banned. Most consumers don't understand how it would work and therefore it's not fit to sell.

@ceraliza Seriously, this should be an easy customizable option at big chains. Save some money if you commit to a very early check out or very late check in, or pay a bit more for a very late check out.

@GaltMD @nickgillespie If you go by the conservative guide 28% of income towards housing, that'd be a 1.8 mil home buying at today's interest rates.

@nickgillespie It does mean that as long as you don’t buy some insane 2 million dollar mansion, you don’t worry about monthly expenses like at all. That’s true and a major luxury. But it absolutely doesn’t mean you’re taking the Learjet to Cabo which I think is what many imagine.

'“I think we’re middle class for this area,” Mr. O’Leary said.' In fact, per a link in the article: median household income in 2023 for their neighborhood was $155,710; for the city as a whole, $79,480. Why do so many people live in fantasyworlds abt their own wealth?

@nickgillespie I learned from New York Mag's cover story about how much New Yorkers earn that I made the same amount of money last year as a nitpicker. And I can afford to live here!

This article is a great reminder that a lot of the affordability panic is self-imposed. This couple wants to live next to Central Park, “tries” to cook dinner twice a week & spends $50,000+ a year on bougie childcare when the NYC average tops out at half that. These are choices.

@mattconvente @InezFeltscher My dude, premiums essentially doubled in the first 4 or 5 years after the ACA was implemented, while simultaneously deductibles more than doubled. An unsubsidized person in 2018 paid 2x in premiums + 2x+ more out of pocket compared to 2013.

@mattconvente @InezFeltscher Howdy! '08 graduate here who needed bridge coverage from May 2008 until I started my job in September 2008. My plan was just under $50/month with a $5k deductible & covered 50% up to $50k then 100% thereafter.

The world may never know what caused the massive explosion in the cost of college. It definitely couldn’t be that most in-state tuition always magically matches the max student loans plus max Pell Grant award to ensure that a steady stream of students are borrowing the max amount to attend. Couldn’t be that.

College tuition has increased 914% since 1983, outpacing all other household expenses, per CNBC.

In two months, we’re moving to Columbus, Ohio. We just bought our first house there. Texas heat and year-round allergies pushed us to move north. After a long process of filtering options and traveling across different states, we decided to choose Ohio. I see a lot of business opportunities there in general, and strong potential to expand my appliance repair business specifically. We plan to launch appliance repair services in 3 metro areas this year. As a bonus, it’s new construction, so I’ll get exposure to many different home service industries from the customer side, and I’m excited about that. It’s my 4th year in the U.S., and my 3rd year running a business that made this possible. A country of opportunities, for sure.
