@adamofyorkshire @ciarancannon What? The woman cyclist is answerable for women SUV drivers, and is therefore guilty of hypocrisy? Is that your point?
English

@ciarancannon Most suburban women drive SUVs way too big for their needs so it's massively hypocritical. Irish cyclists are militant and puss every other road user off. They flout the rules to suit themselves. Cycle on main roads directly adjacent to cycle lanes (particularly lethal on N4)
English

One suburban-based woman told researchers: “I think the majority of Irish drivers do not know what it’s like to be a cyclist in Ireland. I believe if they cycled Irish roads for even just a week, they would understand cyclists much more.”

@MurrayDrever @MerriamWebster Underwhelmed is a good example of this kind of "joke" usage, which has become so common that is accepted as normal now.
English

@MerriamWebster And where does “whelmed” get put?
You can be over, you can be under, but you can’t be “whelmed”
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

real-life example of Chesterton’s fence
i’m in a cafe that has a fridge for drinks. the door is ajar. it shouldn’t be — the drinks will get warm.
it seems obvious. well-intentioned, i close the fridge door.
the fridge it begins making an ominous noise, whirring loudly. the drinks bottles begin shaking. the glass clinks. it becomes apparent to me that i was in error and something is awry.
a barista rounds the counter, goes to the fridge, and slightly opens the door. the fridge stops shaking. order restored

@Polaris501 @AnMailleach Not exactly, but we need more electricians and plumbers and fewer sociologists. That's for sure.

Clearly much of what goes on in universities is just activism poorly dressed up as scholarship.

in @ucddublin yesterday the 'Feminism, Fascism & the Future: Tracing the Global Anti-Gender Movement' event used a photo of @jk_rowling in the presentation alongside topless photos of Trump and Putin to make the point that women who want single sex spaces are evil dictators

@hecheateddotorg @pauladawson78 @benbloomsport .. and by the way it used to rank by sex/gender. But, it doesn't any more. Try it out if you don't believe me.
English

@hecheateddotorg @pauladawson78 @benbloomsport When you register this is what they ask. It is self-identified gender. The results are listed with (but not sortable by) gender. The word "sex" doesn't appear anywhere on the site.

Two distinct things can be true:
1. Women's sport must be protected.
2. Parkrun allows people to run with dogs/buggies. It's for everyone. It's not a competition. The suggestion that a trans runner is a threat to anyone's morning fun run is ludicrous.

@FeministaCanada @huspsa @charlesarthur @fharris2011 It's not whether you *understand* the differences. It's whether you care about them, have daughters who play sports etc.
English

@huspsa @charlesarthur @fharris2011 You don't have to be a sports fan to understand the physiological differences between men and women. This isn't ignorance about sports - this is deliberate ignorance about sex and its meaning.

@darrowoah @JEBistline Not just "pushing themselves" but having it as a target for several months of training.
English

@JEBistline Is this phenomenon caused by people pushing themselves to get below a certain hour time like 4 hours?
English

@PEMdocResists @atrupar Yep, no fan either but that doesn't look all that "ginger" to me.
English

@atrupar I loathe Trump but that looks pretty normal for an elderly man going down stairs. How many people that are don’t go down stairs “gingerly?” Did you expect him to run? Lol

@ColetteColfer You would think the country has split in two camps. Either the protesters are "salt of the earth" acting for "all" of us, or they are toxic masculine, far right, Paddy MAGAs. I don't see much other views being expressed.
English

@RMcGreevy1301 It sounded so strange, like they were making a point about the person's gender, again and again. Why didn't they say "complainant" if they didn't want to identify him?
English

@FoB_blog @JustinOnWeb @coccinellanovem I don't think this is helpful. The other side try to pretend it's not a war, and there's nothing to see here etc. But when people were losing their careers for stating truth, then it is a war for hearts and minds, particularly of the young.
English

@JustinOnWeb @coccinellanovem I wish they would stop calling it a culture war. Either we are a society based on truth, science and fully considered policy or as now, we are a society in deep trouble.

@ruawall It's silly that they had to recite that 2 and a half minute speech. Everyone knows they have lawful authority to require the protest to disperse. They should give them a quick warning, some time to disperse, and then clear everything out.
English

This looks like a troubling list of legislation to use here.
S98 Road traffic act, S9 and s8 of the public order act are reasonable enough. But s9 of the offences against the state act is very worrying. It is rarely a good idea to use ANTITERROR law against protests!

@john_mcguirk @SenatorMcDowell It is a crisis in authority but not legitimacy. The state has every right to smash this protest. It just appears unable to do it.

@bradley_steve @axiochrono There are different versions of the quote. The most common one says both army and navy. People understand the point being made regardless

@MickMacMathuna @axiochrono The quote was 'has its own army' 🤓 Lots of landlocked countries don't have navies 😉
