@jkenney @davidfrum Based on the entertainment value of the Champions League final today, the people of Edmonton aren’t missing out on much

As Premier, I was attacked for refusing to give FIFA a blank cheque to host a couple of World Cup matches in Edmonton. We were open to supporting a host bid within reason, but not to give into FIFA’s ridiculous open-ended demands. It looks like our prudent approach has saved Alberta taxpayers several hundred million dollars.
CHEK News@CHEK_News

The British Columbia government says the cost of hosting World Cup matches in Vancouver has spiked again and could reach $729 million, with even the lowest projection now exceeding the highest estimate from last year. cheknews.ca/b-c-world-cup-…

@KyleWOrton You need to switch from “popular” to “most recent”. On your phone there’s an error button next to Following to do this. On desktop, can do it from the settings

My "Following" tab has been overrun the last two days with accounts I'm not following. This aspect of Twitter had been working to this point. Guess it couldn't last.

@JonahDispatch As a matter of style, the WSJ would never let such a misspelling go to print on such an important element.

@jonfavs You did a bit on a recent episode about how voters lost trust in democrats because of the party leadership and Biden campaign response after the cnn debate. How does it not undermine trust in the pod and party now to pretend there wasn’t a better option in the primary?

I'd just say that if the reason you don't want to support a candidate is because he and his wife chose not to share that they went through marriage counseling to deal with infidelity, that's your choice. But I do think there are other factors in the race that will have more of a direct impact on your life.

@DKThomp @TimAlberta Though having sat through the snooze fest of the Champions League final earlier, I’d say the NBA playoffs and how much better game 7 will be tonight reflects very well on the health of the NBA in contrast.

New pod: WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH THE NBA? I talked to @TimAlberta about basketball's era of bad vibes—tanking, flopping, load-managing, ratings woes, worthless regular season games—and his profile of Adam Silver, under whom team valuations have septupled despite this deluge of negativity. The themes of this pod are the cultural themes of our times, especially the downsides of treating culture like a publicly traded firm seeking to maximize earnings-per-share, and the way that efforts to optimize cultural products for profitability tend to degrade something essential to the thing itself. We also talk about how villains in sports are great for sports—but something else happens when fans start to believe that the sport itself, and the establishment figures charged with managing it, are the real villains. youtube.com/watch?v=fxgg2C…

@JimJones69_ “No one gives a shit about Paxton being bad” Sure dude. Actually people can dislike the podcaster support for Platner, and also support Talarico.

@huspsa @agraybee He cheated on his wife. Get the fuck over it. She did. You have the same exact fucking situation going on in Texas with the Republican and no one gives a shit about that. Incredible.

I find the Paris Saint-Germain construct, controlled by Qatar's sovereign wealth fund, deeply unsympathetic and problematic. And yet, unlike Arsenal, these players play magnificent football. It is a joy to watch. Can you separate art from the artist?

@Birdyword It’s funny because Game 7 tonight in the NBA playoffs is going to be a significantly more entertaining event and product, then that bore of a champions league final everyone who watched it sat through

In a number of key swing states like Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia, black turnout is crucial. If Buttigieg is at the top of the ticket, black voters and especially black men will not show up. He will also do poorly among Latinos, especially if the GOP nominee is Rubio. When you have a diverse coalition, the norms and values of white liberals do not get to dominate.

A lot of Dems in focus groups say they love Pete, but worry Americans won’t vote for a gay man. If polling starts to reflect otherwise, I could see Pete getting a lot of momentum, because he’s actually the candidate people like most when they’re not triangulating for the perceived preferences of other Americans.

@s8mb Could make the argument that as sport is supposed to be a collective experience, the scenes of Arsenal fans in London crowding outside pubs since the early morning is a huge positive outcome from this. Great for the pubs, good shared experience for everyone watching that way.

Before Brexit, there were about 300K net migrants a year, mostly from the EU. After Brexit, immigration shot up to 900K, and EU migration was negative. It’s amazing how stupid Brexit was from every possible perspective. Populism is a low IQ movement.
