The right-wing Catholics now hedging just war doctrine with various qualifications and chin-pulling agnosticism are comparable to the left-wing Catholics who lump opposition to abortion in with health care, minimum wage, etc. as all in some amorphous way equally “pro-life” causes. The clear implications and demands of traditional moral teaching – and thus the offense that upholding it would cause favored politicians and political constituencies – are conveniently dodged.

It’s astounding how many people (including many Catholics) treat the question of whether the Iran war meets just war criteria as if the burden of proof were on the critics of the war rather than on the defenders. This is like saying that when deciding whether to execute someone, the burden of proof is on those who say that the condemned man is innocent, rather than on those who say he is guilty. Most would never take this insanely reckless attitude if the other party were in power, even if the issue were less momentous than war. For example, most of these same people (rightly) did not take this ridiculous “the burden of proof is on the critics” attitude where lockdowns were concerned. This alone shows how corrupted by partisanship and emotion their judgment on the war has become.

Mrs. Prejean Boller was not dismissed for her religious convictions but rather for her behavior at a gathering of the Commission last month: browbeating witnesses, aggressively asserting her point of view, hijacking the meeting for her own political purposes. The Catholic position on matters of “Zionism,” to which I fully subscribe, is as follows: all forms of antisemitism are to be unequivocally condemned; the state of Israel has a right to exist; but the modern nation of Israel does not represent the fulfillment of Biblical prophecies and hence does not stand beyond criticism. If Mrs. Prejean Boller were dismissed for holding these beliefs, it is difficult to understand why I am still a member of the Commission.
