@SeanDubIreland Fair enough, but it was a considerably bigger project than anything done in the last 20yrs... The first time boring a tunnel in Ireland. Was one of the biggest in Europe at the time.

That’s just the power of social media. The tunnell was as bad. I guess MSM just kept it quiet for them Prices are incorrect here for explanation. Govt were offered three light types. Waterproof €50, Water Resistant €40 and standard €30. They chose the €30 light and a full year was spent putting them in up and down all four lanes. Then they started noticing from mix of minor leaks and condensation, the bulbs were blowing. The had to pay an additional €30 to have every light removed and another €50 for install of waterproof light. So it ended up €110 a light instead of €50 and took 18 months longer than was supposed to, JUST FOR LIGHTING.

Don’t fall for the spin. BAM are not the bad guys. They’re a business responsible to shareholders, out to make a profit. Their model may be distasteful, even immoral, but they’re only taking advantage of public service workers who can’t compete against the private sector in the boardroom, a court room or a building site. Simon Harris signed the contracts without a design because he wanted the big headline. That’s it. Everything after that was a snowball.
Seán Mc@SeanDubIreland

Why? If I call Treyvauds and ask for a steak, chips and mushroom meal for 100 people you’ll do me a price all inclusive, probably with a discount. If I call and say I want to bring a group and don’t know how many, or what food they want, you’ll give me a P/P charge based on your menu. It’ll be much more expensive because of my lack of organisation and planning. If you want to build an extension, you can get either a price, or a rate for labour + materials. You go to an architect, have the extension drawn up, the materials specified and you go to tender. Three builders tell you that’ll be 1. €15,000, 2. €20,000 and 3. €25,000. You go with the cheapest. On the first day, you tell him you’ve changed your mind. You ditch the plans and say you want a different design, but you don’t know what it is. You do this every day and at every stage. He has no choice but to charge you a day rate for every man working on site, plus the costs of every material. And an extra charge for undoing the work he keeps doing that you decide to change after he’s started. That’s the BAM model, go in cheap, with expensive rates that are known up front and in the contracts. ABSOLUTELY NO GOVERNMENT CONTRACT SHIULD GO TO TENDER WITHOUT A FULLY COORDINATED BIM MODEL. They told BAM to build a hospital without a design. BAM were pouring concrete floors without knowing where pipes and other services were going, and had to go back and drill them afterwards. If the customer who ordered 100 steaks off you and changed it after the steak were cooked to 20 Chicken, 30 fish, 40 Vegetarian and 10 Lamb get the original price, or would you look for the cost of the 100 wasted steaks, plus the 100 new meals, plus an additional prep fee?

@SeanDubIreland Seriously though, how did we build so much infrastructure from circa 1997-2007? The current civil servants and politicians are just not capable of that anymore....imagine giving this bunch the Dublin Port Tunnel or the Luas. What has changed for things to go so wrong?

@GAAjuggernaut @PRO_Galway_Ball @pfc9302 It's always been that way in Galway for football and hurling. Senior, intermediate, Junior A etc. But your seconds don't go straight to Intermediate, they have to get promoted through winning Junior first. Its all changing this year, tho.

@PRO_Galway_Ball @pfc9302 Weird to me as I’m used to the northern system of every club having a senior and reserve teams. It’s not a negative, it works differently in each county. If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

Interesting addition to the Corofin intermediate team programme last night, Gary sice returning after a one year hiatus and from what I’m hearing, he’s not planning on sticking around for too many more intermediate caps. Have Corofin seniors found the problem to their free taking issues from last year? 👀 jugger

1. Air superiority nearing air supremacy. We're flying B-52s, A-10s, and F/A 18s over the country like it's an early 90's air show in Topeka. The only thing missing is "Rock you like a hurricane" blasting out of some shitty mobile DJ's speakers. 2. GBU-57 3. @JamieBrysonLLB Their case collapsed the moment they used "evidence" from a former member of the RUC/Paras. That's how bad the case was and how out of touch they are that they stood there and presented that with a straight face.

@keira_con They had originally applied for a very large house of over 3000 sq/ft. If they had gone ahead and built that, I'd nearly be sure a resolution could have been found. But they went and built a house well over 6000 sq/ft. They were taking the piss!

I did some digging in to the house that is being demolished and I am rather miffed as to what I have seen in from the planning office. I am miffed though because looking at satellite images shows me that the area in question is very well populated with housing and large agricultural buildings. It is not like this house was built in a isolated area impacting a nature reserve or a national heritage site. Judging by the trees on the site I doubt the house could even be seen. Given the number of houses and buildings in the are including new Agricultural building I am at a loss as to how should agreement could be achieved between Meath Co Co and the owners. The refusal was issued 03/05/2007 by the planning manager the reasons given were as follows. Reasons for Refusal – Guidelines 1. Having regard to the location of the site in an area defined as being under strong urban influence in the ‘Sustainable Rural Housing – Guidelines for Planning Authorities’ issued by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in April 2005, and in a rural area under strong urban influence in the Meath County Development Plan 2007-2013, it is considered that the development which is proposed to be retained would result in excessive density of development in an unserviced rural area, would seriously injure the visual amenities of the area and militate against the preservation of the rural environment. The development which is proposed to be retained would, therefore, be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area. 2. Having regard to the limited size of the original landholding from which the application site is taken, the level of existing and permitted development, the development which is proposed to be retained will result in an excessive concentration of wastewater treatment systems in an unserviced rural area. The development will therefore be prejudicial to public health and be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area. 3. The Planning Authority considers that the two-storey dwelling which is proposed to be retained is out of character in terms of its scale, height and design with the existing dwellings adjacent to the application site. The development which is proposed to be retained would represent an unduly prominent feature in the local landscape, would be visually incongruous and would establish an undesirable precedent for development of this kind. The development would therefore be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area. 4. The proposed development would materially contravene Condition No. 3 of planning permission KA/406669 and would be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area. Condition No. 3 of KA/406669 states that "Prior to the commencement of any development the owner of the landholding of which the site forms part as shown outlined in blue on the location map submitted on 23/12/05 shall have entered into a legal agreement with the Planning Authority under the provisions of Section 47 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act 2000 providing for the sterilisation from any housing or non-agricultural development on the entire remainder of this landholding" and would also materially contravene condition number 3 of KA/40653 both of which permissions have been implemented which is in similar terms.

One of the problems I always had while being the "history guy" for the Age of Empires series was that everyone always made jokes about how terrible the French were at war. Whereas in fact, France was such a force to be feared that during the 1600s and 1700s all of Europe usually had to band together to stop her. It all goes back to France's shameful performance in World War 2 (which was pathetic). That humiliating loss has echoed through the years. But I had to explain it again and again and again to people. Then they would say something like, "Well Napoleon lost." Even the somewhat historically literate, who knew of Agincourt and Crecy, were surprised when I explained that France not only won the 100 years war, but they won it stunningly, laying waste to British Continental pretensions. I blame France's abysmal performance in the Franco-Prussian War, WW2, and Dien Bien Phu. Get your act together France. Be the France that terrified all of Europe and fought literally every other nation to a standstill in 1697.

@Penchanski @bradleybob56 @SandyofCthulhu @prpic29 Nazis used the sea as a defensive barrier. The same way the British did after they retreated. But the British completely underestimated the task at hand and the warfare the Nazis brought. Luckily, the same barrier gave them a chance to regroup, an opportunity the French never had

Do people not wear shamrock for Saint Patrick’s Day anymore? When I was a child the Saint Patrick’s Day parade was a parade of reverence where shamrock was worn and the parade ended at a special mass said as Gaeilge. When did it become like a clown circus?

@Michael60774449 @bradleybob56 @SandyofCthulhu @prpic29 Thats my point. If the channel was an open plain like France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, Nazis would have rolled across it in days. The sea gave British an opportunity to regroup after total collapse in France. The French didn't have such a hold point against the Blitzkrieg

@MikeRockfield @bradleybob56 @SandyofCthulhu @prpic29 What a bizarre argument. Britain had deliberately built the largest navy in the world because of the sea barrier and had relied on naval dominance for over a century. France had the largest, most modern army in 1939 and lost abysmally.

@PeterRNeumann There can never be full closure in all this until the British state admits and recognises its role in the terrorist activity and crimes it committed. The Loyalist and Republican movements have done so and are open to what they did. This show trial is a complete waste of time.
