After 10 years of work, the #NewBook arrived yesterday. Can't believe it is real! Substantive post forthcoming from @AustinMStrange, but this thread is a grateful Thank You to so many people. It really did take a village to raise this book. amzn.to/3lkWu3q 1/5

@JamieMetzl This makes his behavior and his administration's policies so confusing, as they both decrease the trust in America and the probability that our traditional allies will cooperate with us.

Donald Trump is absolutely correct that America needs allies to effectively wage its war in Iran. In fact, we need allies to do most everything effectively in the international arena.

What happens when you invite 150 AI economists (Claude Code) to a research conference, give them the exact same data, and ask them to test the same hypotheses? We did just that. The results reveal a new phenomenon: Nonstandard Errors in AI Agents. 🧵👇

Political Science's academic job market having its worst post-Covid year -- almost 20% fewer jobs than at the same point in the previous cycle (which itself was bad!) Data scraped from APSA ejobs pdfs.

After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today. I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby. It has been an honor serving under @POTUS and @DNIGabbard and leading the professionals at NCTC. May God bless America.

The cowardice and apparent self-hatred of INDOPACOM partisans is getting stark. Your ox is being gored, slowly and repeatedly, and you can’t muster a squeak of protest because you’re captive to the logroll Goldwater-Nichols produced. Have some dignity and speak up.

@DrRadchenko @nfergus You should also underline the last paragraph on the page regarding legitimacy. Use that to reflect on our current predicament.

Rereading ⁦@nfergus⁩’s biography of Kissinger for tomorrow’s class. This here is a striking passage with much resonance for our own times.

Behold the National Security Strategy from less than four months ago: “The days in which the Middle East dominated American foreign policy in both long-term planning and day-to-day execution are thankfully over—not because the Middle East no longer matters, but because it is no longer the constant irritant, and potential source of imminent catastrophe, that it once was. It is rather emerging as a place of partnership, friendship, and investment.” “Conflict remains the Middle East’s most troublesome dynamic, but there is today less to this problem than headlines might lead one to believe. Iran—the region’s chief destabilizing force—has been greatly weakened by Israeli actions since October 7, 2023, and President Trump’s June 2025 Operation Midnight Hammer, which significantly degraded Iran’s nuclear program.” “We should encourage and applaud reform when and where it emerges organically, without trying to impose it from without. The key to successful relations with the Middle East is accepting the region, its leaders, and its nations as they are while working together on areas of common interest.”

@JohnHolbein1 This is why people make working papers public. What did the reviewer actually say? Was there context, like, you should have cited the updated published paper? By itself, the reviewer comment seems... insane. Would be one of those comments I'd ask the editor about.

I just received a new reviewer complaint. We committed the unpardonable sin of citing working papers.

@chris_e_larkin @JohnHolbein1 Good question. I think so. Policy decision processes can be complex, but this was a "decision" by the British voters, and it was an unmitigated disaster.
