A good plan, solid leadership, different hands doing small purposeful actions and pulling into the same direction as well as the support of partners result into significant achievements. At #DISCON101, Rotary Club of Kampala Metropolitan was recognised and awarded for its outstanding performance. #RotaryEyamba

I once made a case for a consistent use of font (type and size) for all correspondences and reports at small entity I headed and I was accused of “making a mountain out of a molehill” In my opinion, using a consistent font for all communication (internal or external) portrays professionalism, and reinforces brand identity. Many people don’t understand that the consistent use of a font in organizational correspondence is more than just being aesthetic. There are entities in this town that write to you and every single time you receive correspondence, it is a different font.     I am now learning that beyond promoting brand identity and portraying professionalism, consistent fonts also offer practical benefits in terms of readability especially for people with disabilities.   The Government of Uganda, especially State House is one entity that I have seen consistently using the same font (type and size) and if a letter is in a different font, I almost immediately doubt its authenticity.

On Saturday, 25th October, we will hold a Community Outreach under the Rotary Family Health Days at Butoolo Health Centre III. This is not only a moment to offer vital health services to the people, but also a time of celebration as we officially hand over equipment to the new neo-natal unit to support premature, underweight or critically ill new born babies. Your presence will make a meaningful difference, as we continue to serve above self.

Building orientation is basically which way your building points—like is it facing north, south, east, or west? Think of it as the building’s personal compass. And honestly, if the building is pointing the wrong way, it’s probably a sign that the architects didn't ask enough questions or skipped on the training! Everyone who went to architecture school knows that the way a building faces affects how much sunlight it gets, how breezy it stays, how much heat from the sun sneaks in, and whether it saves energy or costs a fortune. Get it right, and your building will have plenty of sunshine in winter, nice shade in summer, and won’t burn your wallet with high energy bills. In the northern part of the world, the sun moves up and down in the sky in a big yearly dance, being high in summer and low in winter. Architects have to plan around this to keep the inside comfy all year. Near and along the equator, the sun pretty much moves from east to west all year-round, so it’s a bit simpler — no need for magic tricks to block or catch the sunlight. Honestly, it’s nuts to design a building that gets blasted by the sunrise or sunset all day long unless you’re going for a one-way ticket to a super hot or super cold room. And of course, sometimes the site itself has rules that make perfect orientation impossible. When that happens, clever architects step up with smart tricks to keep the building cozy and efficient despite those pesky constraints.

The UK Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) in Westlands, Nairobi, is a masterclass in modern day exploitation. Kenyans pay hundreds of dollars, wait in the sun, get misinformed, and walk away feeling less human. The new venue at Principal Place (yes, they left 9West) has no proper waiting area and no parking. This is by design to have you pay 17K for their VIP/Premium “services “ If you’re not paying for premium services, you’re left outside in the heat, on the pavement. Elderly people, parents with kids, students, all treated like a security threat Their Communication is Trash. You get vague emails like “your passport is ready for collection ” only to be turned away and told “collection is from 2pm to 5pm, (you can easily indicate that on the same damn email) That means if you show up at 10am, you’ll have to wait till 2pm or you can easily pay the 17K to be attended to quickly.. ?? EXPLOITATION No clear timeline. No courtesy. You’re meant to guess your way through it. These centers aren’t run by embassies, they’re outsourced to private companies who monetize your desperation. It’s a business, not a service. And guess what? No refund if your visa is denied(familiar?) The worst part? This is normalized. We’ve accepted that applying for a visa means surrendering your dignity just to maybe be allowed into a country that benefits from our labor, money, and talent. If Global North countries want to charge Africans these high fees and accord them zero dignity , the bare minimum should be basic human respect. Decent waiting areas. Transparent timelines and Fair communication. This isn’t about security. It’s about power and exploitation… This system needs to be called out and changed. And it’s time African governments started protecting their citizens from this daylight exploitation.

The Health Centre III (HCIII) served about 7,000 people before renovation and currently serves about 10,000. They now have a waiting area that shelters them from the hot sun and rain. As a result, they save on transport to other far off private medical facilities due to the improved infrastructure. Additionally, the health workers are more motivated by working in a decent facility.
