This Government School shaped my life.
Yesterday was my daughter's birthday. On the same day, I received a call from my Headmistress at the Panchayat Union Middle School, Thottampatti, Karur District—the Government school where I studied from Class 1 to Class 8 (1993–2001).
Her words stayed with me.
She shared that the school's student strength has been declining over the years—not because of the teachers or the quality of education, but because many families don't have reliable transportation and increasingly choose private schools. Teachers, alumni, and well-wishers are now coming together to arrange a school van so that children can continue their education.
Without any hesitation, I contributed what I could.
As I reflected on this, I realised something.
This small Government school gave me the foundation to build my life. Every day, three of my friends and I walked from Nochikattuvalasu because there was no bus service. Those walks taught us discipline, resilience, and the value of education.
Today, I run a business, create employment, pay taxes, and contribute to society. None of this would have been possible without the education I received here.
We often celebrate AI, startups, and India's economic growth. But at the grassroots, many rural Government schools continue to face basic challenges such as transportation and declining enrolment. For many children from economically weaker families, these schools are not just an option—they are their only opportunity.
I hope more alumni reconnect with the schools that shaped their lives. Even a small contribution of time, resources, or mentorship can make a meaningful difference.
I also request the Tamil Nadu School Education Department to continue strengthening rural Government schools by addressing practical challenges such as transportation that directly affect student enrolment. Sometimes, a school doesn't need a new building—it simply needs a way for children to reach it.
To every teacher who dedicates their life to educating the next generation—thank you. Your work changes lives.
