The persistent and seductive appeal of discovery learning, despite its limitations and failures, reflects a mix of cognitive biases, ideological commitments, and cultural narratives rather than any strong empirical support. kirschnered.nl/2025/03/30/the…

@drheidibc CKLA has great decodable readers! I use them along with my UFLI texts in K! The kids love multiple stories about the same character or topic! That looks like The Green Fern Zoo! I’ve also used them in private tutoring as well!

I worry about schools that choose to adopt 1/2 of #CKLA. If we only do Knowledge & skip Skills in favor of a different “phonics program” simply bc we already know it, kids miss 1/2 the writing instruction & opportunities to read rich skills-aligned texts. This is a G1 example:

@AnjanetteMcNee2 Thank you for yesterday’s Teacher’s Teach night. You really can go right back in your classroom and do this! I have a new direction. Loving it! It was so great to see the kids work through this

There have been multiple times people have used facts on fire, showed improved student scores, and kids were excited about math. The district leadership learns about it and despite the data tell teachers that they cannot use timed practice in the district. Its maddening that teachers with data are not being listened to.

As often the only "science of math" dude at math teaching conferences, here's what teachers tell me: The materials they are given prescribe inquiry. The kids don't learn, so teachers do other things. Their "math leadership" is highly ideological and repeats these talking points.

This article demonstrates a classic feature of the education debate. Hat tip to @BarryGarelick for alerting me. So what is that classic feature? 🧵

When they started Year 1 (PreK) last year: 47% met benchmark for phonological awareness 29% met benchmark for alphabet knowledge Assessment, instruction, intervention. With the right tools and training, teachers can change reading trajectories…and lives.

Another great one by @C_Hendrick He reminds us of the wise words of Zig Engelmann: “If the student hasn’t learned, the teacher hasn’t taught—that’s not a slogan, it’s an operating principle.” 1/2 open.substack.com/pub/carlhendri…

@colorstreetsta1 I’m sorry! I’ve leaned into instructional techniques that can be used with any curriculum to increase student responses and achievement. But, it sure is hard when you don’t have quality curriculum. 😔 1. Turn and Talk 2. Mini-whiteboards 3. Choral Response 4. Cold Call
