After some player feedback, we've updated our active reload system....though some kinks are still left to iron out! (And the very real possibility we decide that the system isn't fit for the game :D) -Toni, 2d artist #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #screenshotsaturday

I was working on the map, and add time of day mechanic. To make it change mood and depth without compromise hand-draw aestuetic. Concept work, but will require much more work.

@jadel4w I've been happy recently to encounter online experienced professionals who do very messy and sketchy thumbnails for ideation. Been able to learn from their workflow, and doing a mess of a doodle has started to feel more legit to me. -Toni, 2d artist at Murska

@jadel4w Somewhat adjacent: These kinds of heavily silhouetted thumbnails always feel really difficult for me, as I feel like they require a lot of skill. I can't "see" what I'm drawing from just a silhouette. What are the body proportions, what's the actual article of clothing. (cont.)

Gonna talk a bit more about thumbnails. Attached an image of what I consider thumbnails. Just from Google so I’m not focusing on the artist just the standard for what a thumbnail is. More refined sketches? Yes. But that’s not what I’m talking about. We’re talking the very rough, often just silhouette work. Also let me clarify. When I’m talking about reviewing portfolios I don’t mean as someone giving feedback. I mean as someone hiring. The reason for the original post is because one of the most common questions I get asked about portfolios is ‘should I show my working.’ I see a lot of students drawing thumbnails of a design they completed just to show a process they didn’t use. By default every art director says yes. And I realised I’m lying. Because actually I don’t care. What I care about is seeing designs that communicate your creative voice. Outcomes. Do you find thumbnailing useful? Great that’s part of your preferred process. My issue is that this is treated like a standard process when it’s as much a waste of time for many of us. I prefer more refined sketches or just designing straight in 3D. Here’s my issue with them. A lot of people will say that the first thumb was the best one. That’s because that’s the idea you actually formulated in your mind. That’s your true vision for the idea. I notice a lot of my peers sit and think on things before actioning now. Art directors would be better off giving artists time to digest an idea than dump one on them and tell them to action on thumbnails. Design requires thought. A bit of chewing. I followed this process for 20 years because it was just… expected. But I don’t thumbnail for my own work. I do more refined sketches and develop in the canvas. The interesting thing about doing weapon skins was that often we did cut out this process entirely, because it wasn’t informative enough. Often moving straight to refined sketches and even photobashing. It was always a better process as you do more considerate designs. Coming back to character work I realised this is a better process for me. I talk to a lot of students and juniors who think this is the only way. It’s not. No process should matter more than outcome. Anyone else managing artists, I urge you to consider what might work best for them rather than enforcing the same process on every artist. The last gun I did for call of duty had one design. I didn’t start on it for weeks. I didn’t waste time thumbnailing. I just sat and thought on it. I managed to draw it quickly because I could action with consideration. Rae asked me how I did it so fast, I told her it’s because 90% of it had been resolved in my mind. It passed review first time. I saved myself time, I saved money, and the design hit the brief. I’m aware a part of this is relative to skill. But skill and process go hand in hand. I’m always pushing for artist autonomy and a big part of that is allowing people to use the processes and tools that suit them.

Being an indie game dev is like doing 25 jobs at once. I'm an artist, a voice actor, a SFX designer, a trailer editor, a social media manager, a producer and a QA tester. When I worked in AAA I would spend a week making 2 assets, both of which would probably end up getting cut from the game. This is why indie is the GOAT and AAA is dying a slow painful death.

A new piece of promo art has been prepared for She Hunts! As summer starts winding down, we'll be making appearances in a handful of events (mostly in Finland). On the off chance you are in one of those events, please come say hi! -Toni, 2d artist #indiedev #gamedev #indiegame

Testing out the kunai animations and gameplay in-engine. Yes, you can press R to spin the kunai just for style. It has no practical purpose whatsoever. It's just cool. IMPORTANT: This is placeholder audio and not final, just like everything else shown here.

@MurskaDigital What kind of animation style are you aiming for? More grounded and realistic, or something stylized with exaggerated personality? Also, will the animator mainly work with existing rigs, or be involved in refining the animation pipeline too?
