Our history is fragmented. In a previous thread, I covered how our security and intelligence evolved, but I missed this interesting piece I found in a later reading while finding references of MI5/MI6 in cases involving Mau Mau in Kenya.

After independence, we restructured our police and intelligence with President Kenyatta appointed Benard Hinga as the first African head of the SB (served 1yr) who later become commissioner of police replacing Richard Catling. James Kanyotu took over SB till 1991. 7/21

@TiskTusk Even Kamau makes no mention of discipline or punishment of children in Facing Mt Kenya. Perhaps because obligation was to customary law, to which you only became subject after circumcision.

I think even in Kikuyuland it wasn't too common. The little evidence I see suggests children were more or less left to their own devices. The type of child battering we see in modern Kenya might be anachronistic for many societies.

@kui_thehuman Kambas didn't. Most Bantus didn't btw. Ask your elders, or read any reputable anthropology book on African communities. The whites writing those books actually mentioned it because it stood out to them that kids were not beaten unlike where they came from

Humanity, created by God in all its grandeur, is today facing a pivotal choice: either to construct a new Tower of Babel or to build the city in which God and humanity dwell together. In Jesus Christ, this humanity in its grandeur becomes the Way, the Truth and the Life, opening the path for each of us to grow toward fullness. #MagnificaHumanitas vatican.va/content/leo-xi…

@kelvin__kamau @mungaikihanya Governor-general was head of govt. PM had virtually no powers. Q. Seeing we didn't become sovereign or get the right to rule ourselves till 64, what did we really get in June 63. And, besides anthem and flag, what did we get in Dec 63 that we didn't have before?

@mungaikihanya Madaraka (1/6/63): Internal self-rule – PM Kenyatta (Head of Govt), Queen (Head of State) via Governor-General. Uhuru (12/12/63): Full independence – same roles. Jamhuri (12/12/64): Republic – President Kenyatta unites both Head of State & Govt.

1st June is coming up on Monday next week. We shall commemorate Madaraka Day. Do you know what Madaraka Day is and how it is different from Uhuru Day and Jamhuri Day [Both celebrated on 12th December]?

In execution of its duties, the military will protect the State through various equipment, each suited for a unique role (Thread for another day?) These equipment are strategically based in locations that can offer close protection to vital sites.

Tweet Storm Alert. Subsequent to my thread on the UAE issue in Somalia twitter.com/Jasiri_TEA/sta… , I realised that a healthy majority of us don't understand the relevance or role the military plays in our national affairs. So in this thread, I'll attempt to break it down.

Dear Kenyans, I know we are oblivious to what goes on in our region and how this affects our economy. I know our TV stations (@KBCChannel1 @KTNNews @NTVnewsroom @K24Tv @citizentvkenya ) would rather report what Chiloba had for breakfast than tell us what's going on in our.. #KoT

@natsuyasumiSael @LimitlessKe95 Hinga was there for a year after independence before leaving it to James Kanyotu and serving as commissioner till '78. At the time of the coup it was Kanyotu (SB), Benjamin Gethi (Kenya Police) and JMulinge (KAF) who were at the helm of the security services.

Remarkable how the ever growing reach of jihadists isn't seen as at least near existential in Africa. From the Sahel to the Horn of Africa they're on the march even in places like the DRC. What instead happens? Concoction of asinine theories about Jews, the West etc

@Mbwesaa There was a skiing competition on Mt Kenya in 1936. It was supposed to be annual but didn't take off due to lack of participants and partly because of financial constraints. Even if it had, though, climate change would have put an end to it by now.

@Jasiri_CCIP Orwell was a genius. First read this in high school and it was just... “We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness,” he had said. Winston did not know what it meant, only that in some way or another it would come true.
