New paper with @patrickpliu! Though a consensus is forming on the persuasiveness of bots, we study an underexplored application: scaling personalized multimedia. Key finding: issue-based personalization outperforms other personalization methods. See the 🧵 below for more!
Patrick Liu@patrickpliu

New paper w/ @YamilRVelez! A lot of great research on political microtargeting discounts personalization: tailored ads (using AI or not) rarely beat a single-best message. We define two types of microtargeting, clarify when tailoring matters, & showcase a novel audio-based design

For the political ad nerds: the poison parasite counter in action. This ad effectively scores a double hit, introducing negative information to voters while undermining the opponent's main branding device pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34592110/

NEW: Juliana Stratton’s campaign launches a sharp anti Raja Krishnamoorthi commercial, saying he took millions from Trump donors and crypto. And of course, attacking him for voting to thank ICE. #ILSen

Conditionally accepted at the APSR (w/ @scottclifford & @patrickpliu): Why does political information so often change beliefs but NOT attitudes? We highlight the role of belief relevance, or the extent to which beliefs bear on attitudes.

Provocative (research-based) conclusion from innovative & well-connected Dem opinion research outfit Tavern Research. Audio is, on average, now more important than video content in political advertisements. Worth replicating by grad students, etc (esp now w/ AI video gen tools)

A few weeks ago, my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I won’t lie—it's been incredibly challenging for me and my family. Now, I’m embarking on a journey to answer the questions so many of us face when it comes to providing care for our loved ones. I hope you’ll join me.

@davidshor @ZohranKMamdani There's evidence that R practitioners have also picked up on this. At a recent political industry conference, a GOP consultant noted that the Moreno campaign in Ohio prioritized :15s to increase the volume of impressions delivered to primary targets.

Traditionally there's been a quant/qual split on ad length in Democratic politics, with [usually more moderate] quants pushing for shorter 15 second ads and [usually more progressive] qual folks pushing for 60 second ads. Great to see @ZohranKMamdani sided with the nerds!

@ksusys @bhtyson @mattyglesias @cwarshaw Yes - treatment effects are generally proportional to log of length but cost is mostly linear except on the very low end (precisely because of the log). You see this in industry where most of the action has moved to 15 second and even six second ads as measurement has improved.

Three years ago, I published my "abundance agenda" essay. Today, ABUNDANCE, the book I co-wrote with @ezraklein, comes out. This morning's adaptation, published in The Atlantic, is my distillation of our theory of abundance vs. Donald Trump's personal politics of scarcity

PEPFAR is the epitome of soft power. It is a Republican initiative, it is pro-life, pro-America and the most popular U.S. program in Africa. There’s even a waiver acknowledging this, yet I’m told that drugs are still being withheld at clinics in Africa. This must be reversed immediately!!

These are excellent ideas that should be studied closely (especially in the context of the U.S. House). It’s also highly encouraging to see Democratic *moderates* — the pivotal votes for such reform in a future Congress — leading the conversation.
Katherine Swartz@kv_swartz

NEW: Fresh off re-election wins, MGP and Jared Golden have proposed a bipartisan task force to reform elections. Proposals on the table: ⁃Open primaries ⁃Multi-member districts ⁃Increasing House membership beyond 435 notus.org/congress/blue-…

We’re on an unsustainable trajectory as a nation if we don’t address this distrust. On election night I said “I believe the opposite of democracy is apathy.” I still believe we can heal the country and restore trust and integrity to public service. Let’s get to work. END

The red wave hit this year: a ~6% national swing to Trump, from 2020 margins. In Wisconsin, thousands of heroes pulled the swing down to 1.5%. More D votes statewide & in 46 counties. Tammy Baldwin won. Huge wins in the state legislature. Deeply grateful to all—it mattered. 🧵

So it seems my forthcoming paper is especially relevant. Some takeaways: 1) Latino Democrats/Republicans are partisans 2) Latino independents vote for whoever talks about the economy 3) Republicans emphasized economics in Latino outreach while Dems emphasized race/immigration

Dan Osborn was able to generate John Tester levels of incumbency advantage merely by eschewing the Democratic label and moderating. Powerful stuff
Andrew Prokop@awprokop

Good @DKarol point. Divide the above numbers by two to get the D vote share difference (rather than margin difference). MT: Harris at 38%, Tester at 45% (+7) NE: Harris at 39%, Osborn at 46% (+7) AZ: Harris at 47%, Gallego at 50% (+3) etc. x.com/DKarol/status/…

I don't think you'll find a bigger @Catalist_US & @yghitza post-election analysis stan than me, but I'm going to allow myself to have a little AP Votecast...as a treat. Scraped JSONs of both '20 & '24 & will be updating them. You can do stuff like...this. tiny.cc/APV_FNA_24_20_…

I cannot say this enough: - Early exits are not suitable for demographic analysis or comparisons. - AP/Votecast is still preliminary -- should be adjusted for final vote counts. - We don't have Catalist. Or Pew validated voters. It's just too early to have confident takes!
