The ST quota has risen from 12% to 22.5%, SC from 8% to 16.25%, and OBC reservations have also been expanded. While the total number of seats remains the same, this directly reduces opportunities for the general category. The intent may be social upliftment, but the real concern is execution. Without addressing gaps like the creamy layer issue and ensuring that benefits reach the truly underprivileged, the system risks widening inequality instead of reducing it. The question is simple. Currently, Odisha has 21 MPs, about 3.9% of the total. If the amendment passes, Odisha’s representation will rise to 29, but its proportion will fall to 3.4%. Odisha, which has been a frontrunner in moderating population growth and nurturing human capital, faces a potential 15% loss in political representation nationally. We welcome the Women’s Reservation Bill. Biju Babu was a strong votary of women’s empowerment, pioneering reservation in legislative bodies and entrusting power to women. @bjd_odisha has always championed women’s representation, ensuring their presence in Parliament and State Assemblies. Odisha implemented 50% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj Institutions, and we actively support national legislation for women’s empowerment.
