@runaskarbo There are no plans to bring the graphics back. Digital output will continue until GFS v16, when it will either be merged in (and possibly have graphics available there) or discontinued.

However the NAM models snow cover is just BAD. The snow in E Nebraska/Iowa melted yesterday (as seen on satellite this morning), and yet models initialized this aftn still depict snow cover here, despite temps well into the 60s, and show it lingering for days affecting temps

@CoasterBGW @TropicalTidbits One note: this Gantt chart is a bit older; GEFS v12 will not have ocean-ice coupling (it remains in future plans though). However, v12 will include a "two-tier" SST: relaxing SST to CFS forecast. This is mainly to support the new subseasonal forecast period.

What is unclear to me is exactly how this affects the GEFS ensemble system, which itself has received few upgrades in several years to my knowledge.
If the base model for GEFS is being switched out for FV3-GFS, does this imply improvements over the currently rather old version?

The acting NCEP directory has conditionally APPROVED implementation for the FV3-GFS as GFS v15. Implementation date is projected for late Jan. Briefing links lower in this thread.

@TropicalTidbits @CoasterBGW In the meantime, GEFS will continue to use the GSM, but with initial conditions from the FV3-based DA system. GEFS v12 (FY20Q2) will have several advances, including the new dycore and stochastic physics, which have produced substantial improvements.
