@JeffGreason The Harry Potter series was written between 1997 and 2007. What lunatic believes something written less than 20 years ago represents some moldy old myth in need of a “modern audience” reboot? Also, myths are the *opposite* of an empty canvas, obviously.

I can't adequately summarize how vigorously I disagree with this. Myths speak to timeless truths. They can be adapted to new media, but there's no need to "drag them in to the modern age". If you think you have some brand new thing to say, by all means say it, without pouring your new wine in to old bottles -- and see how it stands up against the classics.
National Institute for Co-ordinated Experiments@NICE_Newsroom

The Lord of the Rings. The Chronicles of Narnia. Harry Potter. The latest wave of reboots is a much-needed effort to drag these outdated myths into the modern era. As Mark Studdock argues, "Myths are empty canvases, meant to be painted over with the values of each generation."

@hell_line0 - 1,126,000 estimated abortions performed in USA 2025 - 1% of that = up to 11,260 late term abortions in 2025 - you, a retard: “no woman is…” Unless it’s ZERO, some women ARE, and that’s too many.

Late-term abortions (occurring 21 week) account for less than 1% of abortions performed annually in the USA. There are 8 facilities across the country that will perform a LTA, and access to it is HIGHLY restricted and regulated. No woman is walking into one of these facilities at 39 weeks pregnant and requesting an elective abortion because they no longer want to be pregnant. Stay in your lane and stop discussing things you clearly lack understanding of.

This really is a key issue that modern SFA zealots refuse to look at. With all the strikes against it TOS built an audience anyway. How did it do this? With good characters and good scripts by competent writers. Norman Spinrad, D.C. Fontana, Harlan Ellison, etc. But SFA inherited immense Fandom and wasted it completely with poor scripts focused on terribly made characters.
Stephen Green@VodkaPundit

TOS had cheap sets, low-rent special effects, largely unknown actors, and zero existing IP. So the show had to do this weird thing where it focused on character and storytelling.

Perhaps. Equally likely is the cheap grace offered by most Protestant denominations where very little is asked of the convert. In short - it’s easier. No where in scripture is the easy path presented as the correct one. In fact, our Lord is quite explicit about this.
Ryan Denton@TexasPreacher

In any given Protestant church, you'll find scores of people, astronomically so in fact, who were once papists. Their conversion was rarely complicated or dramatic. They just started reading their Bible.

Zoomer is not a good faith interloctur. Almost all Orthodox clergy are educated. My guess is he thinks cause we emphasize mystery we hate educate. As for laity we dont have a lengthy catechism for our laity to be "uneducated" but ultimately doesnt matter. Zoomer is elitist snob

I have the same struggle. Roman Catholicism retains much of the earlier church forms and has many practical advantages in the US (sheer number of parishes being a big one). Yet by any measure, Orthodoxy is clearly the more difficult path and this should speak volumes on its own. If your measure is proximity to the apostolic faith, it’s not really arguable. Almost every dispute the East has had with the West was over some Western departure from earlier shared practice.

The reason why I'm at a crossroad with choosing between Catholicism and Orthodoxy comes down to this: Which side has the better historical connection to the Church Jesus founded in 33 AD? Which side is objectively closer to the early followers of Christ and what they believed.

@ProtPhilosopher Nice story. Now explain why Orthodox Christians (who’ve submitted to no Pope, much less the Council of Trent) also include the deuterocanonical books, and have done so since the earliest days of the Church.

I noticed several errors in Dr. Taylor Marshall's letter to Protestants. So I offer a corrected version below, addressed to Catholics. Dear Catholics, Your Bible contains 7 non-canonical books, added by the Council of Trent in 1546 over the objections of your own best bible scholar. Marshall says Jerome "changed his mind" about the deuterocanonical books around 402 AD in obedience to Pope Damasus. I've read Jerome's prefaces. This doesn't hold up. Damasus died in 384. Jerome wrote his famous Prologus Galeatus in 391. It excluded the deuterocanonicals as part of the canon. He labels these books as apocrypha. That's 7 years after Damasus was gone. That's not obedience to a living pope. The quote Marshall uses from Against Rufinus, which reads "What sin have I committed if I followed the judgment of the churches?", isn't about the canon. It's about Jerome's decision to translate from the Hebrew instead of the Septuagint. Rufinus attacked him for it. Jerome defended himself. In context, he's talking about translation method, not about which books belong in the Bible. And Jerome didn't stop his take. I've quoted these before, but here he is for the next 24 years of his life: 391: "Whatever is outside of these is set aside among the apocrypha." 398: The Church reads Tobit and the Maccabees "not for the authoritative confirmation of ecclesiastical doctrines." 405: Tobit is excluded from "the catalogue of Divine Scriptures." Judith is "considered among the apocrypha." 406: Cites the Book of Wisdom with "if one wishes to accept this book." 415: Still distinguishing Wisdom ("lest you gainsay this volume") from Ecclesiastes ("about which there can be no doubt"). This is one of his last works. Gallagher, a top scholar on Jerome on the canon, explains, "All of our evidence indicates that he always considered them outside the canon." Jerome never retracted. He never published a revised list. Never wrote "I was wrong." He translated Tobit and Judith under pressure, finished each in a single day, and attached prefaces denying them canonical status. That's not submission. That's a scholar doing what he's told while making sure everyone knows what he thinks. Dear Catholics, please drop the fan fiction that Jerome submitted to Rome on the canon. He held the same position from 391 until he died in 420. And Trent overruled him 15 centuries later by a vote of 24(Y)-15(N)-16(A). It passed by 44%. Not exactly a passing grade. Surely not one I'd write letters to Protestants about.
Dr Taylor Marshall™️@TaylorRMarshall

Dear Protestants, Your Bible lacks 7 canonical books, removed by Martin Luther and John Calvin as “Apocrypha”. Protestants often quote Saint Jerome to justify this removal. Saint Jerome later changed his mind about the 7 deuterocanonical books in obedience to Pope Damasus. His famous quote from the Helemeted Preface (quoted daily by Protestants) doubting the 7 deuteros dates from 391. Nine years later he wrote that he had submitted to the Catholic position and rejected his private opinion. Can Protestants please drop their fan fiction that Jerome was a Proto-Protestant? Later in life (in Against Rufinus around 402 AD), he defended the Church's judgment on the 73-book canon saying, "What sin have I committed if I followed the judgment of the churches?"

@PebMet1 It’s not at all clear that Starship is “nowhere close to mission ready”. If the mission is launching Starlink v3 satellites, they are probably quite close, assuming v3 ship testing goes well. Also, the cost difference between Raptor v3 and RS-25s is truly astronomical.

Starship is on Raptor 3 and still no where close to mission ready. Since 1981, a total of 46 RS-25s were used for the 135 Shuttle launches and what is coming up on the 2nd Artemis flight. Starship threw away more than that in only 2 flights.

This is exactly backwards. Literally determined by the judgement of the Jews. The Protestant canon relies on the Hebrew Old Testament canon finalized by Jews after Christ rather than the Greek septuagint which was widely used during the Apostolic era and continues to be used by the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics.
Rev. Peter Deberny@PastorDeberny

Neither Christ nor the Apostles cite the Apocrypha as authoritative scripture. God gave the Canon to the Church. It was not determined by the judgment of the Jews. Furthermore, there are quite a few problematic texts in the Apocrypha that contradict the Holy Scriptures.

Explaining how dangerous actions could cause injury or death, especially to the young crowd, is not gate keeping. It’s called using common sense and trying to prevent a disaster. (Some) of The younger crowd responding to it saying it’s gate keeping is exactly the problem.
