London Charing Cross and Waterloo East stations will close for 22 days this summer to allow the South Eastern Railway to deliver a £20 million programme of essential railway upgrades. The closure will run from Sunday 26 July to Sunday 16 August 2026, plus some weekends either side, and will allow railway engineers to replace nearly two kilometres of 36-year-old track, rebuild sections of platform at Charing Cross, upgrade track drainage systems and carry out structural repairs to both the Waterloo East to London Waterloo pedestrian link bridge and the Hungerford Bridge, which takes the railway over the Thames to Charing Cross. The investment will modernise the infrastructure on one of the most important sections of the network, helping to deliver an even safer and more reliable @se_railway. We're sorry for the disruption to @Se_Railway and @TLRailUK services this afternoon. Lightning in the Herne Hill area disrupted the signalling through south London. Engineers are replacing the blown fuses and ensuring trains can safely run. Please check before you travel.

A major milestone towards improving the accessibility of Hither Green station for @Se_Railway passengers has been achieved. A new footbridge linking all platforms to the new station entrances at Fernbrook Road and Springbank Road was successfully lifted into place on Saturday 2 May using a 500 tonne and 750 tonne crane, representing a major milestone in the programme to improve accessibility and customer movement across the station. The programme will also see the installation of four new 16-person lifts, staircases and a link passageway between platforms 4 and 5. Read more: networkrailmediacentre.co.uk/news/new-footb…

A major milestone has been reached at Hither Green, bringing us closer to a more accessible railway for everyone. Over the early May bank holiday, a new footbridge connecting all platforms was successfully lifted into place using 500‑tonne and 650‑tonne cranes – a significant step forward in our £28m Access for All programme, funded by the Department for Transport. Once complete, the station will offer step-free access from street to platform for the first time, supported by: Four new 16-person lifts New staircases and a link passageway Upgraded customer information systems, CCTV and ticketing facilities These improvements will make a real difference for passengers with reduced mobility, as well as those travelling with luggage or pushchairs. This milestone has been delivered in close collaboration with our supply chain, including BAM Nuttall as principal contractor. Thank you to all our partners and the local community for their continued support as work progresses. Alongside the station upgrades, we’re also supporting the reinstatement of the adjacent nature reserve, helping to improve biodiversity in the area. With work on track for completion in 2027, it’s great to see tangible progress on a programme that will transform accessibility and the overall customer experience at Hither Green. @Se_Railway @networkrail #AccessForAll #RailwayUpgrade #Accessibility #Southeast #Infrastructure #BuildingBetterRailways
