And I know what some are thinking now. “These are extreme examples. It could never happen here. We are Europe. We are enlightened. We have institutions. We have democracy.” That is what the Venezuelans thought too. In the 1970s Venezuela was one of South America’s wealthiest and most democratic countries. With free elections. With a middle class. With institutions. That is what the Cubans thought too. Castro did not come to power as a tyrant. He came as a liberator. With promises of freedom, justice and equality. The pattern is not that it happens overnight. It happens gradually. First it is just taxes. Then regulation. Then control over the media. Then who is allowed to say what. Then who is the enemy. Then who must be silenced. And by the time you can see what is happening - the institutions are already in the hands of those who wish you harm. Freedom is NEVER lost in a single day. It is lost while people are busy living their lives and trusting that someone is taking care of it. This is exactly what we are witnessing now. This is known by all who carry wisdom. Who can see further than tomorrow. Who understand that history is not an abstraction - it is a warning. We need you. More than ever. To dare to say it out loud.
