In his Staff Shout-Out nomination, States Partnerships Manager Retshak Gunen praised Supply-Side Officer Rufai Isah for effectively monitoring the supply of vaccines in two states—Kano, where he usually works, and Kebbi, where he covered a temporary staff gap. "Despite the increased workload, he maintained diligence in investigating stockouts, accurately identifying false alarms, and conducting detailed follow-ups to prevent recurrence. His commitment to maintaining data integrity and service continuity under pressure makes him a strong role model."

What really happens between a vaccinator and a child? It is more than just a drop, it is patience and care. A vaccinator often has to earn a child’s trust, turning fear into comfort and helping them feel safe while getting vaccinated.

🌍 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 | 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟭–𝟳, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 This year’s theme, “𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗩𝗜𝗣𝘀,” is a powerful reminder of the essential role health workers play—and the urgent need to protect their physical and mental well-being. Health workers are the backbone of health systems worldwide. Yet, significant gaps remain. The @WHO projects a global shortfall of 𝟭𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 by 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬, with the greatest need in low- and middle-income countries. Across diverse settings, health workers continue to deliver essential services, respond to crises, and support communities, often under challenging conditions. Their contributions are critical to strengthening health systems and advancing equitable access to care. At CORE Group, we recognize and value the dedication of community health workers and frontline providers. We remain committed to supporting efforts that strengthen the workforce, promote well-being, and advance community-centered approaches to care. We encourage our members and partners to join the global conversation and continue advocating for the protection, recognition, and sustained investment in health workers worldwide. @CAREGlobal, @JNJInnovation, @Living_Goods, @projecthopeorg, @CMMBTweets, @Seed_Global, @G_Communities, @EuropeanCancer #HealthWorkersAreVIPs #WorldHealthWorkerWeek #GlobalHealth #CommunityHealth #HealthForAll

#ThrowbackThursday! About a year ago, we shared one of our more popular blog posts: "An Immunization Day at a Clinic in Kebbi, Nigeria." Millions of children in Nigeria miss routine vaccinations every year. But on one day at one clinic in Kebbi, a health worker named Mustapha, a mother named Tsaibatu, and a field officer named Sanusi showed what closing that gap actually looks like in northern Nigeria. Honored to lead the Ministry team alongside our valued Development Partners (@WHO, @chigari_ngo, @NewIncentives, @CHAI_health and others) on advocacy visits to the palaces of His Royal Highnesses, the Emir of Zazzau Suleja and the Emir of Minna. These engagements go beyond ceremony, they are strategic. Our traditional rulers are closest to the people, and their partnership is vital to the success of the #NewNigerHealthAgenda. Grateful for their strong commitment to mobilize communities for immunization, institutional deliveries, and enrollment in the State Health Insurance Scheme. When the throne speaks, the community listens. #NigerWillTHRIVE

Social protection programs play an important role in society. Conditional cash transfers invest in children’s health and education and reduce intergenerational poverty, and pensions can prevent the elderly from falling into poverty, among many other examples. But what does the evidence tell us about how to design better programs? Check out the new Handbook of Social Protection edited by J-PAL affiliates @rema_nadeem & @Ben_Olken, featuring 24 chapters summarizing research insights and new directions: bit.ly/4uuTiVi

Our new blog, "Joining the Line," tells the stories of a handful of fathers in northern Nigeria who are showing by example that vaccination is not only women’s work but family work—with a big role for men who want to protect their children from vaccine-preventable diseases. Oral rehydration solution (salt and sugar) can prevent most deaths from diarrheal disease, a leading cause of mortality for children under five. After piloting in 2025, New Incentives is looking to scale the distribution of ORS to reach 1.6M infants annually in northern Nigeria. Because the delivery platform already exists, the marginal cost of distributing ORS during routine immunization visits is approximately $1 per child. How do we encourage more fathers to "join the line" and get their babies vaccinated? One of our field officers recently observed a decline in vaccination turnout at the clinic where they work. In response, New Incentives staff and clinic staff convened an awareness meeting (one of 10,000+ in 2025) beneath a neem tree. That's where men from the community shared some of their concerns about immunizing their children. To learn more about how interactions like this can shift community norms about vaccines, read our new blog: newincentives.org/blog-posts/joi…

The women waiting at the clinic looked up when Azzika walked in—a father, alone, with a newborn tied to his chest. His wife was recovering from childbirth at home. But he was determined to bring his daughter in to be protected, even though his other children hadn't been vaccinated. Why do doctors recommend that babies get the Hepatitis B vaccine on day one of life? The TLDR: If infection happens in infancy, there's about a 90% chance it becomes chronic. And chronic hepatitis B can quietly damage the liver for decades before symptoms appear. The birth dose protects babies during this critical window. 🎬 VaccinesWork writer Priya Joi shares more.
