I was alerted to @mrjamesob going on an anti Israel rant comparing the country to 1930s Germany just before 10.30am and talking about that horrendous allegations within Israel that a Palestinian prisoner was raped. I’ve heard him explain he doesn’t have understanding of the history of the region. I tried to call in, as soon as they opened the phone lines. I’ve now heard five people all agreeing with James’s point of view. The producer told me told me they would call me back if they have time. It’s clear they aren’t interested in the point of view of someone who can present an idea of the history or disagree with anything James says (obvs I agree that the allegation of rape is horrendous but at the moment it is an allegation with the video he refers to being regarded as a potential fake as it has two time stamps on it). If he wants to talk to someone who has been to the region, interviewed people involved and writes for the newspaper Haaretz he refers to (pronouncing it incorrectly) - the producers have my number.

If you see no double standard in the policing, prosecution and sentencing of the current rioters over the past fortnight versus the violent or antisemitic anti-Israel demonstrators over the past year, at the very least you still need to reckon with why that perception has arisen. That perception is not limited to the hooligans and thugs who are rightly bearing the full consequences of their actions: it is widely shared by many law-abiding Britons across the country and by many in the Jewish community, who have suffered the most from failures in policing over the past year. For ten months, they have been frustrated and let down by a lethargic criminal justice system that was apathetic and at times even hostile to the challenges that they faced; now they see how quickly the system can be mobilised when there is the institutional and political will to do so. Why has that been lacking for so long? We cannot tackle extremism through double standards.
