I don’t often agree with Ted Vibert but this is spot on… Jersey Evening Post - Do the States have to spend more time debating whether Jersey should have Senators?

@chrismedmond Constitutional reform moves like a crab - sideways. It is Constables, the bedrock of status quo Bourgeois politics, that must go and be replaced by 1 category of States Member all elected in equal size constituencies. .

@MalcolmFerey @GaelMezec Poverty will not disappear because bureaucrats catch a fraudster. Its more 'pour encourager les autres."
English

@GaelMezec Kept relatively low due to the sterling efforts of Inspectors who investigate cases and, where appropriate, put them through the criminal justice system.

@BBCJersey in 2018 only 2 Constables made election expenses returns. Others did not and were pardoned by AG.
Constables lack legitimacy and should not sit in the States Assembly.

@emmavolney @ITVChannelTV Has the mould disappeared through gratitude? This perennial problem will be acceptable to landlords until security of tenure legislation protects tenants.

@JennBridge @SamMezecJsy Hospitality is shouting about its lack of staff yet prefers to bring in Africans etc a and pay minimum wage. They learn nothing

@Ian_Gorst @lyndonfarnham GERRYMANDER removing Constable's ex officio role would be a true democratic advance. Inequality of representation for urban areas remains
English

Honoured to be sworn in as a Deputy for St Mary, St Ouen and St Peter. It is a privilege to represent our three Parishes. As promised during the election campaign I have as my first action, working with @lyndonfarnham, lodged a proposition to bring back Senators.
English

@FreddieCMMiller In St Helier South every elector received my Poll Card indicating the Town Hall as polling Station. I perform a public service at personal expense, effort and limited gratitude (save TH ballot staff appreciated convenience & thanked me). I did what @StHelierJsy & @Voteje did not
English

Election observers: "In constituencies where borders had changed...the Mission observed voters turning up at the wrong polling station. A few voters in St Helier complained that the website Vote.je had directed them to the wrong polling station."

@JulietteG27 As the crisis deepens so will the division. Objective factors will prevent change until it all breaks.

@Getonthelash2 Opportunists or/and nouveau rich? 'The Party of Government' may have collapsed, but the Party of Finance is eternal.
English

Odd that people suddenly don't want Sam Mezec as Chief Minister..they stood back&let Reform make huge ground&now splutter indignation@Sam being CM . Reform are many things but at least they are honest in their intentions. Better them then the Political opportunists to be honest.
English

@lyndsayfeltham @JEPnews Whilst the Media hails diversity, the real takeaway is the strong reflection of class and party. An organised right of the nouveau riche versus a left of the lower middle. The biggest party of the working class remains the Party of Abstention.
English

Fascinating to see these two headlines together on @JEPnews front page. The purpose of the new electoral system was to have a more representative States Assembly. It appears to have delivered on that score.

Change? Advising hotel worker given a crappy 'Zero Hours' contract. Employers still issue and expect acceptance. No surprise hospitality struggles. Time to fight back. @jerseychamber @jsyhospitality
English

@DarkJersey @JennBridge @StatesAssembly Hopefully not backwards to old gerrymanders. The Ancien Regime awaits reforms.
English

@JennBridge Agreed However I can’t help thinking we will have another four years of Electoral Reforms and @StatesAssembly talking about itself
English

@MozScott A decision was made by the Assembly not to follow the Clothier recommendations. A struggle to be continued against vested interests and anti democratic sentiments.
English

@NickLeCornu A decision was made by the electorate not to implement Clothier.

No fair representation for the West. 4 Deputy seats for St B with 8,038 registered voters (RV) 4 Deputy seats for District No 1 (StO,St P, STM) with 9007 RV. 5 Deputy Seats for St H Central with 5,284 RV, 4 for St H South with 5,020 RV and 4 for St North with 6,496 RV!

Breakdown of registered voters across parishes published bbc.in/39I2Vv6
English

@MozScott Utterly confusing. Go back to Clothier. One category of States Member all elected on the same day in constituencies of equal size. Democratic.
English

@NickLeCornu Not necessarily if you introduce proportionate voting amongst Constables in Dtates Assembly to maintain Parish representation while having Islandwide representation elsewhere, which also can address conflict of interest and work issues.
