NEW: Dearborn Heights mayor calls the father of a teen who drove his Range Rover on a neighbor's lawn.
Mayor Mo Baydoun of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, was seen talking to the teen and his dad before towing the vehicle.
The 17-year-old is accused of reckless driving through the neighborhood and even driving on someone's lawn.
"Today we are going to take the car," Baydoun was heard saying on the phone, as the teen's father tried to convince them not to tow his car.
"The car will be impounded, and he will have to show up to court for a misdemeanor for reckless driving... I am going to make an example out of this."

NEW: Judge apologizes in court to WHCA Dinner shooting suspect Cole Allen.
Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui said that he was “fascinated and disturbed” by Allen's treatment in jail.
Allen was placed on suicide watch when he was first imprisoned. Prosecutors argued that since Allen told investigators he did not expect to survive the alleged attack, he could be a danger to himself.
But an incredulous Faruqui wasn't convinced by that argument, drawing comparisons between Allen and defendants arrested for rioting at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Standardized testing for math and English every so often should be required.
Back when I was homeschooling I didn’t know a single homeschooler who wasn’t working hard, in good faith, and doing a great job.
But, since homeschooling became mainstream and legally accepted, I’ve seen it used a few times as a way to avoid accountability for educational neglect. And I’m not talking about unschooling.
It can also easily be used to hide abuse. Government has an obligation to restrain evil. Even in parents.

Right, if homeschooling is actually super high quality, then homeschooling families should not object to being evaluated, tested, and checked-in-on to make sure their kids are actually learning.

Look, pro-homeschooling people are piling on this guy but he's not wrong at all. I know of families who are straight-up failing to teach their children beyond a 2nd-grade education. Like 16-year-old kids who don't know what the Capital of the US is, have never heard of Toronto, and could not perform a basic algebra problem. While it's true that there are many excellent homeschooling families whose instruction far exceeds that of any public school, the fact is that the American system of "school your kids however you want" does also yield a lot of severely stunted kids who get stuck playing "catch-up" for the rest of their lives. My wife was homeschooled, we might homeschool, I'm not averse to the practice per se, but it's a fact that there's a whole world of multi-generational homeschoolers who are not and will not rise above a 2nd or 3rd grade education level by their own volition. Should the state intervene in these cases? I dunno, the answer to the question is not as "easy" as many make it out to be. The idea of barely getting through 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' at the age of 16 should be appalling, and it IS happening in some American homeschooler families.
