As the Democratic coalition becomes whiter, richer, and more ideologically extreme, the preferences of most black voters are being increasingly displaced by those of the party's new activist-driven base. That dynamic was visible in New York City last year, reappeared in Texas a few months ago, and may soon be reinforced by the results in Michigan and Wisconsin. The shift is from the politics of the black church to the politics of the campus encampment—from a coalition centered on the aspirations of working- and middle-class black Americans to one increasingly animated by Third Worldism, where the moral imagination is organized around Palestine, "decolonization," and the Global South rather than the everyday concerns of the Democratic Party's most loyal voting bloc. There is increasingly little appetite for the more pragmatic, institutionally oriented politics that have long characterized much of the black Democratic electorate.
