Since 2017, all the attacks carried out by the FARDC and their allied militias—from the Mayi-Mayi groups known as “Wazalendo,” to the Burundian army and the FDLR have been well documented from the outset by the international community, including through legal cases in various judicial proceedings. Your statement today, after years of silence, only serves to expose your own responsibility. Here are the facts: In the Hauts Plateaux of South Kivu, the Banyamulenge community is facing systematic persecution, compounded by hate speech from government officials and segments of the media. Over 450 villages have been burned, more than 500,000 cattle looted and sold in public markets, and over 80% of the population has been forced into exile. Those who remain live under constant threat—targeted, arrested, and detained without trial simply because of their Tutsi identity. Hundreds are imprisoned in Kinshasa in harsh conditions, often for years without due process. Meanwhile, violence has escalated beyond civilians to include Banyamulenge soldiers themselves. Brutal killings illustrate the severity of this crisis: #Major Joseph Kaminzobe was lynched and burned alive in 2021, #Capt Patrick Gisore Kabongo suffered the same fate in Goma in 2023. Both were murdered in public in acts of extreme cruelty driven by ethnic hatred, allegedly involving FARDC and their allies. Since 2025, FARDC and allied groups have reportedly intensified attacks on Banyamulenge areas in Minembwe and across the High Plateaus, including drone bombardments, mass displacement, and serious human rights abuses. Yet you have never publicly condemned these attacks. Despite these atrocities, there has been no condemnation from you or your government.
