Reform UK wants to abolish income tax on overtime. It sounds like a tax cut for hard work. Actually a tax cut for the word “overtime”. So little GDP impact & huge cost - we reckon £14bn not Reform's £5bn If you want to spent £5bn on tax cuts, we have ten better ways: 🧵

@FutOffsides I thought it came off the Arsenal 23 first on its way through, so is that still off side?

✅Second correct decision by Farai Hallam's assistant referee in Crystal Palace's disallowed goal against Arsenal. 📸Guessand, who was in a clear offside position, got a slight touch on the ball before it went in the net.

I’m proud of UK leadership on Ukraine - under the last Government, and stepped up with this Labour Government. But there is nothing to be proud of by removing Ukrainian flags and promoting Putin as a leader - like Reform does. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

One of the first decisions made by Essex Reform was to remove the Ukrainian flag from County Council HQ. Let that sink in. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Andy Burnham voted for the Iraq War, an illegal war that killed over a million people. As Health Secretary, he helped drive NHS privatisation. He joined Labour Friends of Israel, opposed BDS as “spiteful”, praised Israel as a “democracy”, and called the Balfour Declaration “British values in action”. He is a Zionist. Stop pretending he’s a radical alternative, he’s more of the same.
Andy Burnham@AndyBurnhamGM

I can confirm that I will be requesting the permission of the NEC to stand in the Makerfield by-election. I grew up in this area and have lived here for 25 years. I care deeply about it and its people. I know they have been let down by national politics. Ten years ago, I decided to leave Westminster. Why? Because, after 16 years, I came to the conclusion that our national political system does not work for areas like ours. I learnt this fighting its failure to invest in the Wigan borough, for justice for the Hillsborough families and against its treatment of Greater Manchester during the pandemic. Over the last decade, I have been challenging this failure from the outside and building a new and better way of doing politics. We have built Greater Manchester into the fastest-growing city-region in the UK and put buses back under public control, introducing a £2 fare cap to help people with cost-of-living pressures. However, there is only so much that can be done from Greater Manchester. Much bigger change is needed at a national level if everyday life is to be made more affordable again. This is why I now seek people’s support to return to Parliament: to bring the change we have brought to Greater Manchester to the whole of the UK and make politics work properly for people. Millions are struggling and they need the Labour Government to succeed. It has already made changes to make life better for them in its first two years. After this week, we owe it to people to come back together as a Labour movement, giving the Prime Minister and the Government the space and stability they need as the by-election takes place. I want to recognise the difficult decision taken by Josh Simons and the sacrifice he and his family are making. I have worked closely with him as Mayor on issues like flooding and illegal waste dumping and have seen first-hand how effective he has been. He has put the communities of Makerfield first, made a real difference for them and should take great pride in that. Finally, I truly do not take a single vote for granted and will work hard to regain the trust of people in the Makerfield constituency, many of whom have long supported our party but lost faith in recent times. We will change Labour for the better and make it a party you can believe in again. ENDS

@labourlewis So the future of the Labour Party rests with one man? Is his foreign policy going to be any different as he is also a staunch supporter of Israel. His history on NHS is not much different to Streeting and will his economic policies differ greatly from Reeves

It’s pretty clear this chaos only stops when Andy Burnham is allowed back into Parliament. It’s what most Labour members, MPs and voters want and the NEC/powers that be should just get on and make it happen asap. The alternative is Farage in No 10.
Geri Scott@Geri_E_L_Scott

A source close to Streeting tells me it had become clear that MPs and members would not countenance a leadership contest that did not involve Andy Burnham. Streeting has not ruled out standing in any future contest, indeed those who had been organising for him say he would definitely be involved, but the thinking is that would come at a later date.

The fact that there’s more noise about Zack Polanski not paying some council tax on a narrow boat, than there is about Nigel Farage taking a £5m bribe to run as an MP….confirms that it’s pretty fucking impossible to have functioning democracy AND a billionaire owned ‘free’ press

The Prime Minister says his government has got "the big political decisions right". Let's go through them. The government chose to cut welfare so it could spend even more on weapons and war. The government chose to demonise the sick and disabled. The government chose to keep children in poverty until it was dragged kicking and screaming to finally scrap the two-child benefit cap. The government chose not to bring water into public ownership, not to tax wealth and not to implement rent controls. The government chose to arm Israel and participate in genocide. The government chose to let the US use British air bases for its war crimes in Iran. The government chose to let Palantir get its hands on our NHS. The government chose to scapegoat migrants and refugees for its own failures. Poverty, inequality and genocide. Those are the government's big decisions. And that is how this government will be remembered.

Nothing justifies killing ~25,000 children in Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, and beyond. Nothing. Not self defense. Not human shields. Not a damn thing. There is no rise in anti-Semitism. There is a rise in the number of people who are very angry at what Israel is doing. Your inability to separate the two is equally problematic. You cannot continue killing thousands of children and expect the world to stay silent.

A good article by @dsmitheconomics - the greater unpredictability of British politics in recent years has certainly contributed to the high gilt premium. Bringing back Gordon Brown should also be net positive for the bond markets even if it doesn’t resonate much with voters.
David Smith@dsmitheconomics

My Sunday Times piece: The gilt market is calmer, because despite huge Labour losses the PM is still there. But markets are on high alert for another lurch into political instability: The bond vigilantes are back, and a Starmer coup would cost us all thetimes.com/article/1bc40f…

If this were a sane country we would have people speaking up today to say OK we made a mistake, he wasn't a terrorist after all, our appallingly neglected mental health system failed both him & the victims and we need to do something about that. Instead we see doubling down. Why?

Jonathan Hall, the “independent” reviewer of terrorism legislation, has called for a temporary ban on pro-Palestine marches, stating it is “impossible” for them not to “incubate” antisemitism. He has made no equivalent call regarding Tommy Robinson’s protests or marches, and has not claimed they incubate anti-Muslim or anti-immigrant hate. Critics have questioned his independence. His father-in-law, Lord Dyson, is a patron of UK Lawyers for Israel. Reports also mention Hall spending family holidays in Israel and visiting Israeli counter-terrorism bodies. His strong comments on pro-Palestine marches “incubating” antisemitism, treating “demonisation of Israelis” as potential hate speech, and support for proscribing groups like Palestine Action have drawn accusations of alignment with government/pro-Israel views. The role has real operational independence (public reports, classified access, no day-to-day government control), and Hall has a track record of addressing both Islamist and far-right threats. However, as a government-appointed position with personal ties relevant to current controversies, full perceived neutrality is contested, especially on Israel/Palestine issues. This is common for such watchdogs; independence is easier to claim than to prove.

This from the Ch4 Salisbury programme is the best CCTV I've seen of Sergei and Yulia #Skripal approaching and sitting on the bench where they were found. At this point we are asked to believe a deadly nerve agent has been working its way into their systems for a couple of hours.

@Keir_Starmer You have displayed nothing but cowardice throughout. While Spain’s leader stood up to the genocidal madman in the White House, you let him use UK bases to commit war crimes while repeatedly pretending you were not. A contemptible display. The sooner we’re rid of you the better.

My statement tonight on President Trump: The threat to destroy an entire civilisation is beyond unconscionable and unacceptable - it’s not just about the niceties of diplomatic language but the intimidation of an entire nation whose people are already under attack by the ayatollahs Trump claims to oppose. We cannot stand by as he rips up international law and risks global chaos as even if he doesn’t follow through this time we are all paying the price for this war - it’s time to ask congress about the 25th amendment and what their redlines are for triggering it.
