NEW: NBC News projects AG Phil Weiser defeats Sen. Michael Bennet for the Democratic nomination for Colorado Governor. Weiser will almost certainly be Colorado's next Governor as Coloradans have elected just one Republican Governor in 55 years.

@ryanhammer09 The Midwest would have the best team, the third best team, the sixth best team, and a 23-3 4 seed. That would be the toughest region in history

@EvanMiya March madness is miles better than the CFP but there are still glaring issues. Every year a higher seed gets punished with playing road games against their lower seed.

Interesting scenario: 7-seed St. Louis would be allowed to play in St. Louis in the first weekend because they aren't the host school and haven't played 3 games in that site's arena. So hypothetically, the 2 seed in that region would have to play SLU in the 2nd round there.

Last four in, from best to worst: Georgia, Miami OH, Missouri, Santa Clara First teams out, in alphabetical order (since we didn't rank them): New Mexico, Ohio State, San Diego State, TCU, UCLA

@TheRealMrACL I’d rather see the undefeated or 1 loss team in the tourney than the 12th place sec team

It sounds crazy, but despite being undefeated, I don't think Miami-Ohio will get an at large bid if they lose in their Conference Tourney, even if they remain undefeated in the regular season. Their SoS is 305th out of 365 teams. Their best win (by far) is a 3-pt win vs Akron. The MAC is also down this year, 17th out of 31 Conferences in net power ranking.

@chrisfallica In 2016 Florida state finished ahead of Louisville and in 2022 Alabama finished ahead of Tennessee, so it would be the third time it happened not the first.

Or zero, which is the number of times two p5 teams finished with identical records and the team which won the head-to-head in the regular season finished behind the team it beat in the final CFP Ranking.

@MattNorlander @NicoleAuerbach I don’t think the mistake is doing these releases weekly, it makes sense for fans to want to know the current standings of their sport. It only seems like a mistake because the criteria the committee uses changes week by week, while college basketball’s committee is consistent.

Given CFB's low number of data points, shouldn't tonight's penultimate CFP bracket reveal be the true *selection* show? Regular season's over. That way, a conf 🏆 game W can't help—but an L can't hurt a team's *inclusion* case. Next Sunday should be for seeding, not selection.
Nicole Auerbach@NicoleAuerbach

Biggest questions heading into tonight's CFP rankings: - Will Miami make a move? Will the win over Notre Dame actually, finally come into play? - How close will Texas get to the 12-team field? - How solid is Oklahoma's No. 8 spot?

@BrooksAustinBA The two teams have identical resumes and identical records. The team that won the head to head matchup (even if it was in August cause it was still an equal part of the season) should be ranked ahead.

Head to head matters. So does context when the head to head was back in August. Don’t know why that’s so hard to understand in regard to Notre Dame & Miami.

@Juicy_J_713 Why even play the games if hypothetical results are more important than actual results? There was a year Penix’s Washington team beat Bo Nix’s Oregon team twice, and the Vegas lines and power rankings still said Oregon was better.

That being said, I’ll provide an Olive Branch. At their best, Miami can go toe to toe with anybody. They have the ingredients. But that’s the difference. At ND’s worst they’re 3 points worse than Miami’s best on the road. At Miami’s worst, Miami can repeatedly lose to unranked teams. By the way - I’d apply the same to Bama and Oklahoma. Bama is better than Oklahoma. They lost, but they’re better.
John Massingale@JohnMassingale4

This is very simple. The committee is saying that losing to two unranked teams is worse than losing to two highly ranked teams in the final seconds. It’s particularly emphasized when ND’s two losses were games 1 and 2 and they look better and Miami’s losses were in October or later and they look worse. Who you lost to and when you lost to them is the rationale they’re using. ND wins that battle. You may not like it, but that’s how they’re looking at this.

@joewheat27 @GoCanes330 Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois last year and still made the playoffs, so that clearly wasn’t the standard last year. The committee can’t just switch the standard to whatever helps Notre Dame

#GaTech should be appalled by their latest ranking in the @CFBPlayoff, and equally as disgusted with some of the teams in front of them. The committee has made it very clear: Bigger brands can have mulligans, but the Jackets will have to go an extra mile.

@J5_Sports1 Miami SOR is 17, notre dames is 13. Miami’s game control is 10th, notre dame is 9. Notre dame does not have a resume so significantly better than Miami to justify them being ranked ahead of them. Same record, almost same resumes, the team that won hth should be ahead

Well we are going to make sure Miami is behind Louisville, right? I expect Louisville will be ranked in the 20s. So the order needs to be: Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame (Miami and ND must be dropped several spots to account for this). But wait, Notre Dame beat USC! So it needs to be: Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame, USC. But wait, USC beat Michigan! So it needs to be: Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame, USC, then Michigan. But wait, Virginia beat Louisville! So even though they just lost to Wake Forest at home, it needs to be: UVA, Louisville, Miami, ND, USC, then Michigan (Miami, ND, USC, and Michigan all get move down 5+ spots in this scenario): Do we see how ridiculous and stupid it is to rank teams like this? Please stop Ari, I know you’re just a middling sports reporter with below average intelligence, but I think even you can figure this out.

@CFBNerds “You can’t artificially hold back ND” that’s just called head to head tiebreakers. Yeah you can if team a lost to team b and has the same record under a similar strength of schedule yeah they should be behind them in the standings. How you could argue otherwise is embarrassing.

Here's my issue with anyone in the "Miami must be ranked ahead of Notre Dame" crowd: - If ND had lost to some other equivalent team, where would they be ranked, and vice-versa? You can't artificially hold back ND, or boost Miami, when everything else says rank ND *way* higher.
