Hard disagree. GenX apathy aside, the 90s were an incredibly optimistic time. The combo of the end of the Cold War and the rise of the internet and global trade fostered a real belief the world was heading inevitably in a good direction politically and economically.

Sadly, Dave Trottier passed in March. Just learned today, 4 months later. Hadn't seen anyone post about it. 😔
If you recognize the name, it’s because Trottier was such a huge name in the screenwriting universe. For decades. His Screenwriter’s Bible lived on many shelves, in all its 90s cover art glory.
Can’t quantify how many writers first got the urge to try screenwriting because of Trottier. RIP 🙏

The Fall (2006) by Tarsem Singh
It's an underrated film, and it might be one of the most visually stunning films ever made. I saw this in the theater, then I immediately bought a ticket for the next screening. Might be the only time that's happened.
I highly recommend.

Hopefully this movie making a billion dollars will shatter the facade that angry people on the internet substantially shift box office numbers. Most movies that end up in the culture war are mid-to-bad, which creates the false impression that the internet tanked their numbers.

Rent Control means "young people pay old people's rent"
San Francisco had rent control.
I had many female friends lured into living with creepy old SF dudes who were paying 10% of market rate just because they'd been there for 40 years.
It never went well. (To put it mildly, some were horrific)
Of course, they are being forcibly subsidized by landlords and the new renters paying 10x the rent for the apartment next door.
It is an INSANE SYSTEM, doomed to obvious failure.
But it sure gets people elected.
