Alhaji Ibrahim Kanja Sesay has resigned effective immediately as Sierra Leone's Minister of Energy as the country’s electricity crisis continues. The reasons for his resignation haven't been made public but a family source told me that Mr. Sesay believes that he is being undermined by the Ministry of Finance over the payment of the over US$40 million debt to the Turkish Karpowership. Kanja, the right-hand man of @PresidentBio was appointed in 2018 to take over the country’s energy sector and his first major intervention to address the energy situation was to sign a contract with the Turkish @karpowership, an agreement that he said was saving the government US$18 million and negotiated in the interest of the country. allafrica.com/stories/201806… As Kanja, the longest-serving Energy Minister in recent times leaves, the country is still faced with an energy crisis that recently caused the death of a baby at one of the biggest referral hospitals in the capital, Freetown. About a week ago, @PresidentBio reportedly gave an ultimatum that he would personally take over the energy sector if the ongoing energy crisis is not addressed. As I look back, I thank Allah not because everything was perfect in 2023 but He showered me His grace, goodness and faithfulness. In 2023, many people touched my heart so deeply that I would never be able to fully express the depth of my gratitude to all. Some uplifted me during dark moments; some rejoiced with me during delights and some inspired me with acts of kindness and love. These memories and more occupy a special place in my heart. As I welcome you 2024, please bring us love, joy, compassion and peace. Open our hearts to forgiveness and strengthen our bonds as a people. Oh 2024, may our patriotism overcome our individualism and may the seeds of our public service germinate prosperity for every citizen. I extend my condolences to all of us, his family, and the UK at large. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace and May light perpetual shine upon him. Pa Komrabai Peter Penfold was of a different European breed. Difficult to tell whether he was an African or not. Sierra Leoneans across the globe will sure miss him.
