You’re comparing two completely different situations. People who plead guilty receive a sentencing discount of up to one third under UK sentencing guidelines. People who go to trial obviously don’t get that reduction. So comparing the sentence of someone who pleaded guilty with someone convicted after a trial is statistically meaningless. It’s not evidence of bias. It’s literally how the law is designed to work.

@DHKITCH @Sargon_of_Akkad If you look at the conviction rate for those who went to trial, with a jury present in social media based speech crimes, it's incredibly low. Contrast that to the length of sentence issued by judges for the same type of charge, for those who plead guilty. It's staggering

That concern is exactly why the system already has multiple safeguards. Even in judge-only trials: • Judges must give reasoned written judgments explaining their decision • The case can be appealed to the Court of Appeal • The process is public and recorded • Judges are bound by sentencing guidelines and case law A jury verdict, by contrast, gives no reasoning at all and cannot easily be scrutinised. Also worth noting: magistrates decide the vast majority of criminal cases already without juries and have done for decades. So the idea that removing juries in limited circumstances suddenly leaves no checks or balances simply isn’t how the system works.
