@HowardBeal1976 @airmainengineer All airlines have this, it’s called stabilized approach criteria. Ours is 1,000’ AGL +20/-5 KIAS of computed Vref, vertical speed less than -1,000 FPM, configured for landing and checklist complete. At 500’ AGL +/-5 KIAS. 300’ AGL within the lateral confines of the runway.

@airmainengineer How about TWO aborted landings? Pilot claimed orders from tower, AA pilot friend advised AA has rigid speed and altitude checkpoints or go-around.

✈️ Hold onto your seats! A roaring United Boeing 737-900ER suddenly aborts its landing and blasts into a full go-around at San Diego International — the engines thundered so hard they actually triggered car alarms in the parking garage! 🔊🚨😱

@JDSutterer @BushTurf @BuschStadiumIII @Cardinals All it takes is a mower with roller(s) and a skilled operator. And apparently an approval. The Arch is an iconic look for sure! (I never got past straight lines when I cut greens on golf courses.)

OTD in 1975: a General Dynamics prototype YF-16 [72-1568] crash lands in Texas (US). Test pilot Neil Anderson made a wheels-up landing in a grassy area along the runway after reporting landing gear problems. He was unhurt, jet rebuilt, and testing program continued.

@MCCCANM I would love to see the engineering data/drawings for the PAPI installation. And if these airplanes are crossing the highway on path (two and two) or slightly low (three and one). I know it was a huge deal in the 747-400 and a concern in everything else.

I think they’ll have to do something about this. A simple solution is artificially shortening the runway by just repainting it to start further down. This is pretty commonly used to “lift” the standard 3° approach path over objects…but I’m sure there is some complication.

This whole area into Runway 29 at Newark Liberty Airport desperately needs a redesign. This is Air Canada B787 Flight AC548 from Vancouver slightly missing that truck!

@MCCCANM As a guy who routinely crams a widebody airliner onto a 5,802’ runway and occasionally sticks that same wide body on a 5,701’ runway (BUR & SNA), I could (but won’t) give my thoughts on it.

Looks like there were gusty winds, but I don’t know how to explain this one. If you suddenly lose the gust at approach speed, you lose a lot of lift…but we carry extra speed to account for that. The aim point is usually 1,000’ down the runway, with the flare leaving you touching down around 1,500-1,800’ down the runway (up to 3,000’ is acceptable). If landing on runway 29 at EWR, however, they’d use “Short Field” techniques. The aim point is in the first few hundred feet, and the target for touching down is around 1,000’, but no later than 1,500’ (or you go around). Sorry, I don’t honestly know how this happens. Usually there is a lot of space between the runway threshold & anything else (called an overrun, clearway, etc.) but it doesn’t appear to be the case here.

JUST IN: Baltimore bakery truck struck by a United Airlines plane coming in for a landing at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. According to local reports, the plane was a United Airlines Boeing 767-400. Senior vice president of Transportation & Logistics at H&S Bakery, Chuck Paterakis, says the driver was headed from Baltimore to New Jersey when he was hit. The driver suffered minor injuries, according to Fox Baltimore. "Our maintenance team is evaluating damage to the aircraft and we will investigate how this occurred," a United spokesperson said.

To get ahead of what appears to be a developing media cycle… The military routinely flies celebrities in their aircraft. It’s often the Thunderbirds or Blue Angels, but sometimes it’s just the local two-seat fighter. Or a helicopter. Gerard Butler, Chris Pine, Josh Duhammel, etc., have all flown with the thunderbirds. Google it. Long list. Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, Walter Payton, etc., have all flown with the Blue Angels. These are considered recruiting investments, getting famous people to talk about what it was like & getting some visibility for the service. It’s pretty standard stuff. They choose celebrities who are most likely to appeal to their potential recruits & relay a positive message of the military. There is a whole program. We’ll also do some of these flights for local dignitaries, like the mayor or something. Trying to build community goodwill. In addition, we do “incentive flights” for service members who win awards. Usually at the local level…something like “Airman of the Quarter”. These were always fun to give, and it was nice to let them come see what it’s like…they worked hard & deserved it. Once a year or so we’ll do a “Spouse Flight”. In big jets you actually take them up & do a whole sortie. In small trainers & fighters, you just do a “spouse taxi”, taking the runway (usually in formation) & accelerating for takeoff, but aborting before becoming airborne. The military has strict rules about spouses flying onboard, some of which are *kind of* waived in the big jets, but spouses are generally not permitted to be at the controls at the same time. Anyway, as I said I see a narrative developing & I’d like to get ahead of it. Hope that helps!

@Hush_Kit The T-37: I think officially the “Tweet”, and called the Tweet. Sometimes called the “6,000 Lb Dog Whistle” for the extremely loud whine the engines produced. The KC-10: Officially “Extender”, but called “Big Sexy”, sometimes “Gucci” The T-6: Texan. No alternates I knew of.
