When we cannot rely on our “Allies” they are not allies. The United States has paid Roughly $28 of the $35 Trillion spent on NATO. We forgave, effectively, trillions (in constant dollars) in aid to all of Europe from both WWI and WWIi. The UK benefitted the most but France did as well. Then there is the Marshall Plan. God only knows the effect in constant dollars, but at least $200B. So… fuck Europe.

Our withdrawal from NATO would be long overdue. NATO has run its course. The threats that existed at its inception are no longer relevant 76 years later. Europe has been leaning on American taxpayers for their security for decades, offering too little in return. That’s why I introduced the Not A Trusted Organization (NATO) Act last year, and why President Trump is right to question American membership today.

Well there’s a surprise: HMS Dragon, the only Royal Navy warship deployed to the region during the conflict with Iran, has taken to port for maintenance. The Type 45 destroyer, the only one the Royal Navy had available, headed for the East Mediterranean weeks after the fighting began — and took its time getting there. The Ministry of Defence, which originally denied any problems, now says there are water supply issues. So it’s gone to a safe berth to undergo repairs. No doubt the full story will emerge in the days ahead.

The current state of the Royal Navy: 2 aircraft carriers — neither operational. 6 Type 45 destroyers (our most powerful warships) — one operational (in Cyprus). 7 Type 23 frigates (less powerful, much older) — three operational 5 Astute class nuke-powered subs — one operational (in Arabian Sea?). Surely those responsible for this appalling state of unreadiness (a national embarrassment if ever there was one)— political, civilian and military — should be fired/charged. Their incompetence has effectively left us without a navy. Quite an achievement for an ancient island nation.

Yes, yes, yes, the Navy classifies them as warships. But they are lightly-armed, designed for maritime security and policing roles rather than high-intensity sea warfare. Which is why they’re not warships in the sense of say a T-45. Unless, of course, you think they could form part of a carrier group or be positioned off the coast of Cyprus. If you self-styled naval experts worried less about nomenclature and more about what was happening to our navy, we might still have one.
