The Arnhem bridge sits in the background, probably the most recognised bridge of the Second World War. In the foreground, a 25-pounder field gun. Explaining to my Arnhem Battlefield Tour group today why this gun has no connection to what happened here. At nearly a ton, airborne forces never carried 25-pounders. The 1st Airborne Division used 75mm pack howitzers, light enough to fit inside a Horsa glider. This gun is a memorial piece, not a historical match.

Dan Lategan Watch 👀 For a bit of fun I’m predicting he’ll get 1000 runs before the end of May! Only been done eight times, last guy was Hick in 1988 and Turner in 1973, both for Worcester. Six matches, needs 167/game.

@ITVRugby any chance you could get one of the teams to change shirts at half time? How on earth did this happen when Wales couldn't wear red against Ireland.?

@gregbagwell On my Greenwich staff course it was said time and time again that "the RAF does politics really well". So here we are.

Another hatchet job by an ex-sailor in the media. The real story here is why do we only ever hear claims of “inter service rivalry” from the dark blue end of the spectrum. Is there a conspiracy, are they just looking for scapegoats, or can you just never ground that axe enough?

@KimCJorgensen @mikemoviez He's in Pancho's in this movie. Why would he be in a Navy movie? You're getting mixed up with the real Viper who cameos in Top Gun.

@mikemoviez Lucky you for watching this for the 1st. time. You'll be back for more! Breaking the sound barrier with a busted rib! Chuck Yeager was the bar-keep in the first Top Gun. He only passed away a few years ago.

Now watching for the first time: THE RIGHT STUFF [1983] Directed by Philip Kaufman "The Right Stuff is based on Tom Wolfe's book, chronicling the early U.S. space program from the test pilots who broke the sound barrier (like Chuck Yeager, played by Sam Shepard) to the first Mercury astronauts (including John Glenn, played by Ed Harris). The film contrasts the lone-wolf heroism of test pilots with the public-relations-driven, sanitized image of the astronauts, exploring themes of courage, ambition, and the human cost of the Space Race. It features a star-studded cast, stunning visuals, and won four Academy Awards."

Like me many of you were at Wembley 45 years ago today when we played Liverpool in the League Cup Final 1981. We would win the 2nd Division that year and met reigning 1st Division Champions and the team that would be crowned European Champions again in May - and we drew 1-1 aet⚒️

13 March 1927. Lance ceased to be an official weapon of the British Army. It had been the leading weapon in cavalry charges by mounted soldiers. With the advent of trench warfare, lances and cavalry charges ceased to play a significant role in mechanised warfare.

Some are putting out a story that Sir Rich Knighton (CDS) should resign over recent events in Cyprus. Some say he’s lost the confidence of the PM, some say an RAF officer can’t appreciate the Navy’s capability and some say he is not a warfighter. Let’s address each in turn: 1/12

@realdonkiddick @gregbagwell Once upon a time married women had to leave. Pregnancy didn't come into it. I'm just stating the obvious; if one's operational experience is second hand then one's experience is limited.

Good question? Maybe because even the RAF needs heroes? Could be for, out of hours 1700-0900 hrs and weekends? I’m sure you lot have a better answer? 😉😁😁

@NavyLookout @spectator As an engineer he's probably got a bit of a downer on his own aircrew to boot. A ridiculous choice for CDS.

Explosive report in the @spectator On 27 Feb, the eve of the bombing of Iran, the National Security Adviser asked CDS, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, whether Britain should send warships to the eastern Mediterranean. ‘What about the carrier?’ he pressed, referring to HMS Prince of Wales. Knighton replied: ‘We don’t need the carrier. We have an aircraft carrier – it’s called Cyprus.’ But the failure to send a warship proved to be a disastrous political judgment that enraged Cyprus, Jordan and the UAE. ‘ As an RAF man, he is seen as too dismissive of the Royal Navy’s ability to ‘show the flag’ and reassure allies. Knighton’s performance has not been helped by Starmer’s inexperience in military matters.... #selection-1899.0-1899.90" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">archive.is/93NE8#selectio

Another outground ... Kidderminster hosted a Worcestershire County Championship match every season from 1921 to 1973, and then again from 1987 to 2002. More recently it has been bought back into use when New Road has been flooded with games moved in 2019, 2020 and 2024 (Bill Smith)
