When we came into office, we uncovered a $12 billion budget deficit. Today, I’m proud to say we brought it down to zero. We didn’t close the gap on the backs of working people. We closed it while funding parks, libraries, safer streets and making historic investments in public housing. Call it Pothole Politics. Call it Democratic Socialism. It's government that delivers for the people who make this city run. That’s what New Yorkers deserve. And that’s what we will keep fighting for every single day.

In case you’re keeping track, there is a deadly outbreak of an infectious disease, and we have no: * CDC director * FDA commissioner * Surgeon General

Can we please spare a thought for the devastated families of the people who have died from the Hantavirus outbreak, and the stress and misery of the other passengers now stuck in quarantine? That human aspect gets lost between the fear mongering and denials...

1/ We are living in an era of emerging zoonotic infections. While hantavirus is the focus today, preventing epidemics requires sustained investment in the tools needed to prevent, rapidly detect & respond to biological threats, whether natural, accidental, or deliberate.

Makary is out. Now the US has no CDC Director, No FDA Commissioner, and no Surgeon General. And the NIH Director who is also defacto acting CDC Director never trained in Medicine. During this hantavirus outbreak the US needs steady public health leadership and a authoritative voice to the American people. There currently is no one to fill that role.

Disease detectives are usually invisible. Their work is patient, quiet, and methodical, and it saves more lives than almost any other profession. The Hondius outbreak will end sooner because dozens of them did this work well. tomfrieden.substack.com/p/what-disease…

🧵 Today’s American History Lesson: Quarantine & isolation aren’t new or radical - they’re as American as the Republic itself. In 1647, the Massachusetts Bay Colony passed the first formal quarantine law in the colonies to stop plague arriving on ships. By the 1700s nearly every colony had similar rules. In 1796 Congress passed the first federal quarantine law; in 1799 Philadelphia built the Lazaretto, America’s first quarantine hospital. We’ve always used these tools to protect our ports, cities, and communities from imported disease. 1/3

Let’s normalize telling boys the stories of what women in the family went through. Boys seem to hear "grandma makes the best turkey" while daughters hear "grandma was married at 14." Tell the boys the cost of their favorite meals, too.

My father’s call to “March on Ballot Boxes” remains urgent. In 1965, at the conclusion of the Selma to Montgomery March, he called for the kind of civic engagement that could help transform this nation. It is deeply troubling to witness progress that was so hard fought for being weakened and dismantled. But we must not be discouraged, and we must not be deterred. That is why conversations like “The Power of the Vote: Protecting Democracy in a Defining Moment” matter so much. We must stay informed, stay engaged, and remain committed to protecting democracy at the ballot box and beyond. I hope you will join The King Center virtually today at 12 PM ET for this critical conversation. #MLK #VotingRights #BelovedCommunity #Nonviolence365

Can someone who is an expert in this space just keep it real with me and tell me if I should be worried about Hantavirus or not? I've got 3 kids and the youngest is 4 months old, I don't know what to believe.

More worrying than the Hantavirus outbreak itself is the reaction to it. It's quite clear that the US in particular is not remotely prepared to deal with another major outbreak/pandemic and has allowed the most of absurd anti scientific ideas to take hold Not good
