@stonedbaseball @BaseballJeff1 This absolutely would not be the first time they’ve said a guy (Lee) doesn’t need an IL stint and then ended up putting him there anyway. Wouldn’t make much sense to swap him for any of the lefty hitting bench players since they face righties on Friday and Saturday

@julesposner I mean, Mahle and Houser were "savvy lower risk higher reward signings," they're just not particularly good. The irony of it all is that they would be much better off right now if they just gave Gausman and Rodon the money they wanted

This is the problem. Posey thinks (smarter) fans WANT high priced, big name guys like Edwin Diaz. People want either savvy lower risk higher reward signings or some transparency and commitment to already existing internal options. Instead they signed JT Brubaker and Ryan Borucki.
KNBR@KNBR

. @knbrmurph: “Why did you go into the season without a defined closer?” POSEY: “I guess Murph you probably wanted us to sign Edwin Diaz, then you’d probably ask me why I signed Edwin Diaz because he’s on the IL. Every decision we made you could play arm chair quarterback on it and say it was good or bad. We’ve got some guys in the bullpen doing some really good stuff.”

@CityLightSports @gggiants @cyyoungwebb And he was good and mostly healthy for the winningest team in franchise history in the final year of his deal! They’re apparently holding a perpetual grudge because he had Tommy John and then sucked during a fake season with no fans in the ballpark

@gggiants @cyyoungwebb I mean the Cueto deal nearly got them to the NLCS his first year, but I get that executives aren't as "by any means necessary" as I am.

@EYDShow @BaseballJeff1 Yeah, he’s been totally solid. I just don’t think he’s dominating in a “forcing the issue” type of way. 49 K/21 BB in 48.1 IP, and I don’t think his stuff looks all that great. But I’d be happy to have someone pull up a bunch of Savant data and tell me my eyes are deceiving me!

@gggiants It doesn’t even really make sense at this point. They can’t pick in the top 10 next year, and (I think?) they already have a pretty solid pipeline of position player talent coming together anyway. They need young pitching but nobody has ever really solved that problem by tanking

@kirkreports I agree, but Affeldt was really the only high-tier acquisition in those bullpens. Casilla was a non-roster guy, they acquired Lopez, Ramirez and Kontos in very low-level trades, Romo was a 28th round pick…

@thecrippenator @GiantHotTakes He was on the Twins for 10 minutes, they just took advantage of their higher Rule 5 Draft position to buy a 17-year-old prospect from the Giants

@GiantHotTakes The more he plays you'll figure out why he was let go by the fucking A's and Twins. Hint: He's really not that good and league pitching will find out his weakness soon enough...

@knbrmurph The same metrics that say Patrick Bailey is the best defensive player in MLB? One thing watching Bailey taught me is defensive stats are worthless. Especially fielding run values. Seriously. Take a look at how its calculated. Its a joke.

Working on a theory that your team is screwed if your owner follows the one-syllable first name/two-syllable last name pattern: Tom Dundon Marc Lasry Josh Harris John Fisher Dan Snyder Mark Lerner Jim Pohlad Steve Ballmer John Henry Steve Cohen I can go on

@NateOnDubs @BaseballJeff1 Further apologies for being a catcher nerd, but after looking at every roster Adrian del Castillo and Moises Ballesteros are also third catchers who are being deceptively listed as DHs

@NateOnDubs @BaseballJeff1 FWIW the Cardinals and Guardians also have three catchers (and maybe more teams that I’m not thinking of)… MLB.com lists Ivan Herrera as a DH and David Fry as an outfielder

As of May 18, there are five MLB teams that have three catchers on their roster (SFG, BAL, PHI, BOS, KC). There are just two teams though that have four left-handed relievers in their bullpen (SFG, WSH). The common club on those two lists? The Giants. San Francisco is the only club with three catchers (Haase, Rodriguez, Susac) and four lefties relievers (Miller, Gage, Borucki, Hentges) on their current roster. Even knowing two of their catchers can play in the field, is it a sustainable strategy? #SFGiants

@seals244278277 @AndyKHLiu In fairness Haase has played 56 big league games in left and played out there this spring and Eldridge has never played LF in a pro game and hasn’t played any outfield since 2023

@giantssfcentral Also, not to cherry pick too much, but if you remove four basically meaningless starts coming back from TJ in Sept. ‘19 and a 2020 season that wasn’t real baseball, Cueto had a 3.59 ERA with SF. Just an objectively good Giant

@giantssfcentral Cueto started an ASG with SF, had a 108 ERA+ as a Giant, including a 101 over 22 starts for the winningest team in club history in his walk year. And if nothing else Samardzija posted, had two 200+ IP seasons, a 200 K year, lasted until the final start of his contract.
