A modest increase from the current federal $7.25 to around $10 is a more limited proposal than the larger “living wage” figures often debated, and it lines up reasonably well with the inflation erosion that has occurred since the last raise.
Inflation and real value
The federal minimum has been frozen at $7.25 since July 2009. Adjusting purely for CPI inflation, that 2009 rate is worth roughly $10.60–$11.20 in 2026 dollars (exact figures vary slightly by the CPI series and endpoint used). In other words, the real purchasing power of $7.25 has fallen by about 30 percent over those 17 years.
A move to $10 would therefore restore most (or nearly all) of the 2009 real value. That is a smaller step than proposals aimed at 1968 peak purchasing power ($12–$14), median-wage benchmarks ($17+), or productivity-adjusted levels (often cited near $25). Because the absolute increase is modest (+$2.75), the employment and price-pass-through risks are generally expected to be smaller than those associated with much larger jumps—especially in the states where the federal floor still binds.
Broader cost-of-living changes
You are also right that the basket of “necessary” goods and services has expanded. Smartphones, broadband, higher healthcare costs, childcare, transportation, and other items that were less central (or cheaper relative to wages) in earlier decades now form a larger part of basic functioning for many households. Pure CPI adjustment captures average price changes but does not fully reflect shifts in what is considered essential. That strengthens the case for some updating of the floor beyond pure 2009 purchasing power, though it does not dictate any specific number.
Practical context
Only about 1 percent of hourly workers still earn at or below the pure federal $7.25; the rest are already above it because of state laws, local ordinances, or market wages. The population-weighted “effective” minimum across the country is substantially higher (around $12 in recent estimates).
Roughly 20 states still rely on the federal rate (or have no higher state minimum). A $10 federal floor would mainly affect those jurisdictions and the lowest-wage roles within them.
Small businesses in low-margin sectors would still feel a cost increase, but a $2–$3 rise is less likely to force major staffing cuts or closures than a sudden jump to $15–$25. Many already pay above $10 simply to attract and retain workers.
The alternative you mention
“Reversing pricing” or preventing prices from outstripping demand is essentially a call for lower inflation or more supply-side growth. That is a complementary (and longer-term) approach: faster productivity growth, more housing/housing supply, reduced regulatory barriers in key sectors, and stable monetary policy all help real wages and living standards without relying solely on a statutory wage floor. Minimum-wage policy and broader price/supply policies are not mutually exclusive.
In short, restoring the real value of the 2009 minimum via a move toward $10 is a coherent, relatively moderate step given the inflation that has already occurred and the expanded set of necessities. It would not by itself deliver “economic security” for every household or eliminate the need for other supports (EITC, housing policy, skills, etc.), but it is harder to argue that the current $7.25 still serves its original purpose as a meaningful national floor.

Raising the minimum wage helps billionaires.
None of those companies pay minimum wage!
It’ll have 100% impact on small businesses that can’t afford to pay like Fortune 500 companies can.
46% of 🇺🇸 work for small businesses.
Socialist policies destroy small businesses.

@DC_Draino So I, as a black woman can call people all kinds of niggers with impunity, BUT if a white woman calls a man (who is daring her to say it) nigger, she ends up in court and may face jail time. America, we have a problem.
